The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued an Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) for a total of thirty (30) hours. The Alert begins at 12pm today (Tuesday 26th April 2022) and will remain in effect until 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday 27th April 2022).
According to the Met Office, instability associated with a low level trough and favourable atmospheric conditions can result in a high (70%) chance of heavy showers/Thunderstorms. These conditions are expected to persist intermittently over the period, with a few settled periods accompanied by light rain. Heavy downpours can lead to the threat of isolated Flash Flooding events that may cause temporary traffic disruptions. Gusty winds may be experienced in the vicinity of heavy downpours. Citizens are advised to be on the alert for cloud-to-ground lightning activity. Persons should not venture into flood waters. Monitor weather conditions and updates from official sources. [Source: Loop] Since all schools physically re-opened one (1) week ago on 19th April 2022, at least twenty-eight (28) children have tested positive for COVID-19 while ninety-two (92) more are in quarantine. The Ministry of Education on Monday (25th April 2022) shot down a social media post that has been widely circulating — calling it “fake news.” The post stated that the Ministry was considering closing schools once again or implementing a rotation of hours. The Ministry said its Education District Health Unit continues to assist Principals in the management of COVID-19 cases which arise at school. “This system has been implemented since February 2021, when schools opened for physical attendance and continues at all schools.” The Ministry of Health revealed in its daily COVID-19 update this afternoon (Monday 25th April 2022) that there are 458 new COVID-19 cases in Trinidad and Tobago plus three (3) additional deaths. T&T’s total active positive cases is currently at 7,127. The number of new cases represents a 124.51% increase in reported cases from yesterday.
There have been 7,161 new cases and sixty-six (66) deaths so far in the month of April. The Ministry reported 204 new cases yesterday plus one (1) more unfortunate deaths. The country’s death toll has increased to 3,816. As of 20th April 2022, 268 deaths were fully vaccinated persons while 3,149 deaths were not fully vaccinated. 390 deaths were recorded prior to 24th May 2021 (date at which the first group of vaccinated persons became fully vaccinated). A total of 710,965 persons have been fully vaccinated, representing 50.8% of the population. Meanwhile, 689,035 persons are not fully vaccinated (only received a first dose or no doses), representing 49.2% of the population. 149,818 persons in total have taken a booster shot. Based on data from 22nd July 2021 - 20th April 2022, 3,223 patients in the parallel healthcare system (Hospitals and step-down facilities) are fully vaccinated, representing 18.1%, while 14,581 are not fully vaccinated, representing 81.9%. The Ministry states that the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during a 3-day period between 22nd - 24th April 2022 and not the last twenty-four (24) hours. The Ministry also notes that there are currently 153 COVID-19 positive patients in total being treated at Hospitals and step-down facilities (down 3.16% from yesterday). The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) said in a statement this afternoon (Monday 25th April 2022) that an induced low-level trough over Trinidad and Tobago due to a shear-line from a low pressure system in the middle of the Atlantic, is causing the atmosphere to be unstable, especially after much daytime heating.
The Met Office notes that accompanying this, has been an increase in moisture in the atmosphere due to Northward migration of moisture from Northern South America into the vicinity of Trinidad and Tobago. This has led to the development of Thunderstorms and moderate to heavy showers in some locations after Midday. The Met Office says this pattern is likely to continue over the next two (2) to three (3) days, but some days are likely to be more unstable than others. As a result, the chance of isolated Thunderstorm activity over Trinidad and Tobago, is likely to continue. Some relief from the rainfall can occur by Friday (29th April 2022), when plumes of Saharan dust is likely to dominate. According to the Met Office, from its Rainfall Outlook for April, issued in March, it indicated that the month was likely to receive near-normal rainfall. The Met Office added that prior to today’s rainfall, April was relatively dry, with cumulative rainfall at 8am on Monday (25th April 2022) being a meagre 25.4 mm, just 43.4% of the average total (58.8 mm) for April. The rainfall currently being observed will likely lead to the forecast of near-normal totals being achieved. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
UPDATE (1:15pm): Violent rainfall rates (well in excess of 50 mm/hr) are being recorded across North-Central Trinidad. Street/Flash Flooding is likely along the East-West corridor in the vicinity of St. Augustine.
