UPDATE: You can watch the live stream of the Press Conference here. The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) announced a short while ago that Prime Minister Keith Rowley will be hosting a Press Conference at 2:30pm on Saturday (26th March 2022) at the Diplomatic Centre in St. Ann’s. What can we expect at this Press Conference? Prime Minister Rowley said very openly recently that he sees no reason not to fully open the country. He made the statement during the People’s National Movement (PNM) virtual meeting at the Pleasantville Community Centre in San Fernando on Tuesday night (22nd March 2022). He said at the time that the idea would be sent to the health team in a few days, while he continues to follow the situation overseas. P.M Rowley said on Tuesday night that he waited to see what would happen after the staging of the “Taste of Carnival” in February/March. Given the additional mixing, and the passage of more than fourteen (14) days, he said he has seen no change for the worse in the country’s circumstances. “I am now being minded to tell the country I see no reason now not to open the country up completely.” He told his audience in San Fernando that he will be meeting with the health team over the next few days to discuss the issue. “I will take decisions commensurate with the circumstance in Trinidad and Tobago and compare it with what happens elsewhere,” he said with a reminder that a few countries are facing major outbreaks at present. “So we have to be careful and mindful.” Exactly how far the Government has decided to remove the existing restrictions, such as masking in public places, “Safe Zones,” public gathering numbers, etc., will be revealed at the highly-anticipated Press Conference on Saturday. A Media Release from the Communications Division of the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) states that according to Section 3(1) of the Public Holidays and Festivals Act, Chapter 19:05, Cabinet on Thursday (24th March 2022) advised Her Excellency the President, Paula Mae-Weekes, that Monday 2nd May 2022 be declared as the date of the Public Holiday in celebration of the festival of Eid-Ul-Fitr.
The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued a High Wind Alert (Yellow Level). The Alert began at 2:55pm this afternoon (Thursday 24th March 2022) and will remain in effect until 2pm on Saturday (26th March 2022).
According to the Met Office, there is a high (70%) potential for moderate to strong winds with brief wind gusts in excess of 55 Km/hr. Such wind gusts are capable of displacing unsecured roofs and loose outdoor objects. Windy conditions can also aid in spreading existing bushfires faster along landscapes. Marine activity can be adversely impacted by these strong winds and visibility may be extremely low during dusk and dawn. Wind waves can reach occasionally above 2.5m in open waters and choppy in sheltered areas. Citizens are advised to secure loose outdoor objects and livestock. Marine interests should also exercise extra caution. Be alert to bushfires and follow the instructions of lifeguards. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates. The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service is advising the public that the fifth escapee has been recaptured. Anthony Seepersad, who along with four (4) other inmates escaped from the Golden Grove Prison on Sunday (19th March 2022), was recaptured on Wednesday (23rd March 2022), at around 11:10am on Morne Coco Road, St. James. Seepersad was found hiding in the trunk of a car, driven by his brother. Both men were arrested. According to the Prison Service, he was taken to the Maraval Police Station and later conveyed to the Arouca Police Station. He is now facing an additional charge of 'Escaping Lawful Custody.'
Commissioner of Prisons (Ag.), Deopersad Ramoutar, is today thanking all agencies involved in the eventual recapture of all the escapees. Special mention was made to the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, Trinidad and Tobago Police Service - Air Support Unit, Canine Unit, Inter Agency Task Force, Northern Division Task Force and Southern Division Task Force, and the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service - Emergency Response Unit and Special Operations Team. Commissioner Ramoutar stated that the commitment and enthusiasm displayed during the exercise was “commendable, and the results of this uniformed and multi-agency approach have proven most effective. This approach will continue to be utilized as we seek to uphold mandates of public safety and National Security.” The bodies of Steve Jugmohan, 40, and Ramkisssoon, 38, who lived together at the La Paille Road home of his relatives in Princes Town, were found before Noon on Saturday (19th March 2022) by the couple’s 9-year-old daughter. Steve’s sister, Sharon Jugmohan, who lived upstairs, was notified by the child that she found her parents dead. Ramkissson worked as a Play Whe booth operator and Steve at times did private jobs with his maxi. Apart from the couple’s 9-year-old daughter, they also left behind a 5-year-old son. Additionally, Steve had a 16-year-old daughter from a previous relationship and Ramkissoon had two (2) sons living abroad. Since the tragic incident, the 9-year-old daughter has been staying with Ramkissoon’s relatives, away from the home. Sharon said, “I think it’s safer for her to be by them, away from here for the while. I didn’t want her to be here because of the situation that happened here and she was here. Every time she watches that door she’s going to remember.” There have been two (2) videos circulating on social media with the couple. Sharon said in one of them, the couple said they were in problems and while they asked for help, nobody assisted. They also asked for their children’s grandparents to take care of them and said their possessions were for their children. The 9-year-old child can be seen in the video, which has been reviewed by Police. Sharon said she has been in contact with the child, who was also visited by Officials from the Children’s Authority. Acting Police Commissioner Mc Donald Jacob, who met with the family after the incident, also promised counseling for the girl and her younger brother. The boy, who has a hole in his heart, has been staying with Sharon. She said she has no intention of separating the children and they will be in contact with both sides of their family. “Both of them are safe and both of them okay,” she said. Sharon said in an interview last weekend that the family was told the couple may have had financial issues. However, the couple did not indicate this to her. She said she questioned her brother, Steve, when he sold two (2) of his vehicles but did not give much details. Sharon said while the couple kept to themselves, there was no indication that they were thinking of ending their lives. The couple’s bodies were identified by their relatives at the Forensic Science Centre recently and autopsies are expected to be done soon. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
