According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the fields were located after Officers made a one-mile trek into the forested area. The lots comprised of two (2) camps, two (2) seedling beds, 1,200 fully-grown marijuana trees, and 12.5 kilogrammes of cured marijuana with an estimated street value of $12,218,000, all of which were subsequently destroyed by the Officers. One Uzi magazine was also found at the site. No one was arrested. The exercise, which took place between 7am and 1pm was supervised by Ag Insp Conliffe and co-ordinated by Sgt Mc Donald. It also included Ag Cpl Seelalsingh, Cpls Bahadoor, and Forbes along with Officers of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Southern Division Task Force (SDTF), and Air Support Unit. Enquiries are continuing. According to the TTPS, the search was conducted as part of Operation Strike Back 3 which paid particular attention to persons known for possession of firearms and ammunition offences. Officers of the Southern Division Task Force, co-ordinated by Snr Supt Lucia Winchester, Supt. Carthy, ASP Ramdass and Insp. Phillip conducted the exercise in the Arima area where the Officer and the housewife, who were at home when the firearm was seized, were detained. The offender targeted, however, was not at home at the time of the search. The team of Officers, supervised by Sergeants Joseph, Charles, and Wilkinson and included Officers of the Criminal Investigations Department Operations Team, also conducted searches of four (4) additional residences during the exercise. Following the announcement today by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) regarding COVID-19 vaccine donations from India and China, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has stated that the PNM’s “Covid lies” are unravelling. The Opposition Leader is also questioning, “When exactly can our citizens expect to be vaccinated?” In a statement shared on Facebook this evening (Wednesday 24th March 2021), Persad-Bissessar said, “The latest news that the COVAX mechanism will fail to deliver COVID-19 vaccines to Trinidad and Tobago by the end of March 2021 as promised by the Government is incredibly disturbing. We are now hearing that India and China are both donating doses of vaccines to our country. This is great news. However, we are yet to learn of a definite timetable of the arrival of these vaccines.” She also stated, “it is now abundantly clear to the nation that the Rowley regime’s failure to prepare a proper national vaccination plan has placed our nation in grave jeopardy. This Rowley administration was last to enter talks with vaccine manufacturers and they were last to write to the government of India. Now our nation is last in the regional ranking of vaccinations.” Persad-Bissessar had previously quoted statistics collated by 'Our World in Data' which provided the latest data on the number of actual persons who received at least one (1) dose of the vaccine:
She said all these other small islands have been able to vaccinate more people than Trinidad and Tobago. See the Opposition Leader’s latest statement below: PNM’s Covid lies unravelling The Ministry of Health revealed in its daily 4pm update this afternoon (Wednesday 24th March 2021) that there are thirty-eight (38) additional COVID-19 cases in Trinidad and Tobago. The Ministry reported just four (4) new cases yesterday. The country’s death toll remains at 141 at this time. T&T’s total positive cases now jumps to 7,903, with 187 being active cases. A total of 7,575 patients have recovered from the virus to date. 137 persons are in home self-isolation and there are 242 persons in total at State quarantine facilities. The Ministry states that of the thirty-eight (38) new positive cases, three (3) are recently repatriated persons. Further, the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during the period 21st - 23rd March 2021 and not the last 24 hours. In its latest update, the Ministry notes that there have been two (2) recovered community cases. Recovered community cases refer to persons who were previously COVID-19 positive and in self-isolation at home, and subsequently met the discharge criteria and were released from self-isolation. Pictured Above: Prime Minister Keith Rowley arrives this afternoon for one of his customary meetings with Her Excellency, Paula-Mae Weekes, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) issued a statement this afternoon (Wednesday 24th March 2021) announcing that both Governments of India and China have agreed to donate COVID-19 vaccines to Trinidad and Tobago. In its statement, the OPM said that T&T will receive 40,000 doses of WHO-approved AstraZeneca vaccines from India and 100,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccines from China. The vaccines from China have not yet been given WHO-approval. The announcement comes after heavy criticism against the Government of T&T for their lack of initiative in sourcing vaccines early, whether via commercial means or from donations. Many Caribbean countries were able to secure donations, particularly from India, ahead of T&T and they have been able to jump-start their vaccination program. See the full statement from the OPM below: Subsequent to official correspondence from the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago to the Prime Minister of India, the Government of India has today officially informed the Government of Trinidad and Tobago that 40,000 doses of WHO-approved AstraZeneca vaccines have now been approved for donation to Trinidad and Tobago. Ian Alleyne’s Crime Watch will have a new home from 6pm tonight (Wednesday 24th March 2021) on CNC3. Alleyne’s popular show was last seen on the network back in 2016. He allegedly left following a disagreement with the network and he has worked to rebuild his brand since then. Alleyne had a rough time after his departure from CNC3 as he had to battle serious legal and financial issues, having to repay hundreds of thousands of dollars stemming from a defamation lawsuit. Synergy TV eventually took him in after no other network wanted him or his show. Crime Watch has been on that network since then. Alleyne announced on Crime Watch last night that this was his last show at Synergy TV. The head of the network called in and Alleyne expressed his heart-felt thanks for taking him in when no one else wanted him a few years ago. Crime Watch will continue to be produced at his Studio in Chaguanas by Alleyne and his team, and will be streamed live on CNC3. Alleyne signed his new contract with Guardian Media Limited (GML) yesterday afternoon. In attendance were GML’s Managing Director, Brandon Khan, as well as Alleyne’s close friend and Attorney, Om Lalla. Alleyne said he has spent the last few years expanding and strengthening the brand which he described as a “voice for the down-trodden and oppressed,” but admitted that he was excited “to be back home.” Four (4) years older and four (4) years wiser, Alleyne said, “I am really happy to be back.” On both parties mending fences, Alleyne said, “This is somebody I could never forget.” Joking that he could forget Lalla for a lot of things, Alleyne lightened the moment as he smilingly promised, “I won’t be a Judas to you again.” Commenting on the return of Crime Watch to CNC3, Lalla said the following: It is an exciting move. The reach of CNC3 and the programming that Crime Watch offers, Ian wants to carry it to a different level. So many times we see problems taking place in the society and there is the need for coverage, the need for people to vent the issues. Ian has been able to achieve that and he has learnt a lot over the years. I think CNC3 is going to allow him to reach an even higher level of excellence. Alleyne said, “People who are so upset and saddened by what’s happening in this country, they feel they have no voice…just to let them know I am taking it to a different level.” Alleyne noted that since leaving GML in 2016, in the intervening time he has grown and learnt a lot and is eager to bring that to this new partnership. Welcoming the more seasoned-Alleyne back into the fold, Khan said the following: We have always believed in Ian Alleyne and Crime Watch and the potential of the programme to help viewers, to help the down-trodden and those without a voice, especially in this very difficult time. An Arima man was granted $200,000 bail by a Justice of the Peace (JP) yesterday (Monday 22nd March 2021) after being charged with five (5) counts of larceny of money. Kevin Erin Hosten, 46, of Ana Street, Cleaver Road, Arima, was charged by a team of investigators attached to the Fraud Squad following reports made by five (5) persons that they were fleeced out of their money.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), Hosten was charged by PCs Gaddar, Legiere and Lutchman and will appear before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate on 7th April 2021. The accused was arrested on 18th March 2021 by Officers attached to the Arima Police Station after one of the persons pointed him out. The accused was subsequently positively identified on 20th March 2021 during an identification parade. According to the victims, a man allegedly received several payments totalling $211,600 which represented the down-payment for the importation, as well as the delivery fee, for vehicles to five (5) buyers during the period April 2009 to April 2019. The persons told the Police that they gave a man, who purported to be a foreign used car dealer, money for the purchase of four (4) Nissan Y12 AD wagons, a Toyota Voxy, a Honda CRV, a Nissan AD Wagon and Versa motor vehicles. The man allegedly failed to procure the vehicles and attempts to contact him proved futile. The payments were $34,000, $48,300, $68,000, $48,300 and $13,000, respectively. Reports were lodged at the Fraud Squad and the investigative team later arrested and charged Hosten for the offences following enquiries and advice received from the TTPS’ Legal Unit. |
