T&T’s total active positive cases is currently at 18,358. The number of new cases represents a 36.45% decrease in reported cases from yesterday.
The Ministry provided the following information about the latest deaths:
There have been 14,518 new cases and 433 deaths so far in the month of January. The Ministry reported 705 new cases yesterday plus eight (8) more unfortunate deaths. The country’s death toll has increased to 3,302. As of 19th January 2022, 189 deaths were fully vaccinated persons while 2,659 deaths were not fully vaccinated. 390 deaths were recorded prior to 24th May 2021 (date at which the first group of vaccinated persons became fully vaccinated). A total of 684,141 persons have been fully vaccinated, representing 48.9% of the population. Meanwhile, 715,859 persons are not fully vaccinated (only received a first dose or no doses), representing 51.1% of the population. 105,157 persons in total have taken a booster shot. Based on data from 22nd July 2021 - 5th January 2022, 1,914 patients in the parallel healthcare system (Hospitals and step-down facilities) are fully vaccinated, representing 15%, while 10,863 are not fully vaccinated, representing 85%. The Ministry states that the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during an 7-day period between 16th - 22nd January 2022 and not the last twenty-four (24) hours. The Ministry also notes that there are currently 549 COVID-19 positive patients in total being treated at Hospitals and step-down facilities. Technical Director of the Epidemiology Division, Dr Avery Hinds, confirmed at the Ministry of Health’s virtual Press Conference yesterday (Saturday 22nd January 2022) that evidence now suggests community spread of the highly transmissible Omicron variant is taking place in the country. Dr. Hinds noted an increase in COVID-19 infections last week over the previous week. He said an upward trend is not surprising, given the circulation of the Omicron variant and he is watching with concern to see if the January total will exceed December’s peak of 20,538 cases. Based on current projections, there will be increasing numbers of Omicron cases with no travel history or contact with a traveler. Dr. Hinds explained, “We know that what we see is probably a fraction of what is happening, so we do want to advise additional caution for the entire population as we now have to deal with this more transmissible variant. The evidence suggests that there is community transmission, and once we see that, knowing how Omicron behaves, basically we are now contending with community spread.” Meanwhile, Principal Medical Officer, Dr. Maryram Abdool-Richards, also warned at the Press Conference that an increase in hospitalizations is looming. Currently, ill patients occupy nine (9) out of ten (10) beds in the parallel healthcare system on any given day. Fewer patients were admitted to the parallel healthcare system last week when compared to previous weeks. However, Dr. Abdool-Richards said for the past ninety-five (95) days, an increasing number of patients have strained the system. She noted, “Let us not become prematurely comforted by this decrease in numbers because it is marginal and also, we continue to see very severely and critically ill patients in our Hospitals and Accident and Emergency.” As of Saturday morning, overall Hospital occupancy was at 61% (435 patients), with 109 patients in step-down facilities. Dr. Abdool-Richards said some patients are entering Hospitals requiring immediate Intensive Care Unit (ICU) treatment. She reported that patients are occupying sixty-six (66) out of eighty (80) ICU beds and advised that early admission, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, co-morbidities or not, is essential for a faster recovery. A statement by Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh on Friday (21st January 2022) announced that religious or ecclesiastical organizations and their members will be permitted to light fires for religious purposes at beaches, rivers, streams, ponds, springs and similar bodies of water, pursuant to Regulation 4(3) of the Public Health [2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-n CoV)] Regulations, 2022.
According to the statement, pursuant to Regulation 4(3) of the Public Health [2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-n CoV)] Regulations, 2022, with effect from 21st January 2022, “the Minister of Health hereby authorizes religious or ecclesiastical organizations and their members to light fires for religious purposes at beaches, rivers, streams, ponds, springs and similar bodies of water.” Religious or ecclesiastical organizations and their members are reminded that pursuant to Regulation 4(2) of the Public Health [2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-n CoV)] Regulations, 2022, beaches, rivers, streams, ponds, springs and similar bodies of water, shall be open between the hours of 5am and 2pm. Further, all persons are advised to comply strictly with the (other) legal requirements of the Public Health [2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)] Regulations, 2022 and the public health guidelines. The statement concluded by saying, “The Ministry of Health will continue to monitor this development and take steps to safeguard the health of the population.” In a Media Release on Friday (21st January 2022), the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts said it has taken note of the comments in the public domain related to the headline in Thursday's Daily Express, “Carnival is On.”
The Media Release said, “It is unfortunate that the statement released by this Ministry was misinterpreted by the Daily Express which caused the misleading headline, ‘Carnival is On.’ This misleading headline has, understandably, generated negative feedback from some of this Ministry's most valuable Carnival and event industry stakeholders who may have connected the headline in the Daily Express to the Ministry's positions on Carnival 2022.” The Ministry reiterated that it has proposed a “Taste of Carnival” which would include specific types of Carnival activities for vaccinated persons only, in Safe Zone arrangements, “deemed to pose the least risk from a public health standpoint in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.” These Carnival-type activities, according to the Ministry, include, Calypso, Soca, Extempo, Chutney, and Steel Pan shows and competitions usually held during the Carnival Season. The Ministry said it has not proposed that Carnival in its truest sense be held, nor did it ever attempt to mislead anyone as it pertains to its proposal for safe Carnival activities to be held during the Carnival Season. The Ministry added that, “we acknowledge the hardship being experienced by the events industry and by all culture workers as indicated recently by our valued stakeholders. And in that regard, we continue to work together, as we always have, to bring relief, and to consider and implement proposals for an early, but safe and cautious restart to the entire entertainment industry.” The Media Release concluded by saying, “The Ministry also acknowledges that these events as proposed in its ‘Taste of Carnival’ 2022 proposal cannot and is not a replacement to the numerous opportunities and events that a full Carnival celebration provides. We strongly encourage everyone to be vaccinated and urge the event stakeholders to continue to join us in that call at every opportunity.” |
