UPDATE: Below is video from the scene, shortly after Girob’s body was found at the beach.
According to reports, the body of missing 30-year-old Vanna Girob has been found in Tobago during a search for her. She was reported missing to the Shirvan Road Police Station after going for a walk in Arnos Vale, Tobago, at 9am on Tuesday (25th January 2022).
Girob was said to have traveled to Tobago over the weekend in order to spend time with her aunt at a Villa in Arnos Vale, following the recent death of her grandmother. She was last seen wearing a green and grey sweater, and green and blue pants. Reports indicate that some of her clothing was found, folded neatly, on a trail near the property, prior to the discovery of her body. A missing persons report was issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) earlier today (Wednesday 26th January 2022), which stated that Girob lived in Butu Road, Valsayn South, Trinidad. Girob’s brother, Dillon Girod, who is also in Tobago, previously said to the media, "My sister was dealing with distress after our grandmother died last month. She came to my aunt's Villa in Tobago to spend time with my aunt and uncle. But my aunt called and asked that we come for her. This has never happened before. We saw her on Tuesday morning and we were on the property but somehow she left without being seen. Since then we have not seen her." Police are said to be at the scene at the beach in Arnos Vale where Girob's body was found. The cause of her death has not yet been ascertained and investigations are ongoing.

A 33-year-old woman was granted bail in the sum of $60,000 with a surety, when she appeared before Justice of the Peace (JP), Stephen Young, on 22nd January 2022, charged with cruelty to a child.
The accused is expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate on 11th February 2022, to answer to the charge. According to a Police report, a relative of the victim stated that on Wednesday 12th January 2022, the minor was at home with her mother, who allegedly became upset when the child told her father that she had not eaten for two (2) days. The woman allegedly grabbed the girl by her neck causing bruises. She then attempted to hit the child with a bench which resulted in the child sustaining bruises on her hand. PC Kiel Castle of the Child Protection Unit in the North Eastern Division conducted an investigation into the matter, which resulted in the arrest and subsequent charge of the 33-year-old unemployed woman with the offence of Cruelty to a Child. Investigations were supervised by W/Supt. (Ag.) Claire Guy-Alleyne, ASP (Ag.) Roberts, Insp. (Ag.) Lopez, Sgt. (Ag.) Banwarie and W/Cpl (Ag.) Peters-Wilson. Pfizer and BioNTech announced today (Tuesday 25th January 2022) that they have started testing an Omicron-specific COVID-19 vaccine in healthy adults between the ages of eighteen (18) and fifty-five (55). The clinical study will evaluate the safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of an Omicron-based vaccine candidate. The study will have three (3) cohorts examining different regimens of the current Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine or an Omicron-based vaccine. The study will draw upon some participants from the companies’ Phase 3 COVID-19 booster study and is part of their ongoing efforts to address Omicron and determine the potential need for variant-based vaccines. “While current research and real-world data show that boosters continue to provide a high level of protection against severe disease and hospitalization with Omicron, we recognize the need to be prepared in the event this protection wanes over time and to potentially help address Omicron and new variants in the future,” said Kathrin U. Jansen, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Head of Vaccine Research & Development at Pfizer. “Staying vigilant against the virus requires us to identify new approaches for people to maintain a high level of protection, and we believe developing and investigating variant-based vaccines, like this one, are essential in our efforts towards this goal.” “Vaccines continue to offer strong protection against severe disease caused by Omicron. Yet, emerging data indicate vaccine-induced protection against infection and mild to moderate disease wanes more rapidly than was observed with prior strains,” said Prof. Ugur Sahin, CEO and Co-Founder of BioNTech. “This study is part of our science-based approach to develop a variant-based vaccine that achieves a similar level of protection against Omicron as it did with earlier variants but with longer duration of protection.” The study will evaluate up to 1,420 participants across the three (3) cohorts, as follows:
Clinical and real-world data continue to find people who are vaccinated, particularly those that have received a booster, maintain a high level of protection against Omicron, particularly against severe disease and hospitalization. The companies have previously announced that they expect to produce four (4) billion doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in 2022, and this capacity is not expected to change if an adapted vaccine is required. The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, which is based on BioNTech’s proprietary mRNA technology, was developed by both BioNTech and Pfizer. [Source: Pfizer]

There have been 15,509 new cases and 466 deaths so far in the month of January. The Ministry reported 389 new cases yesterday plus eighteen (18) more unfortunate deaths. The country’s death toll has increased to 3,335. As of 19th January 2022, 189 deaths were fully vaccinated persons while 2,659 deaths were not fully vaccinated. 390 deaths were recorded prior to 24th May 2021 (date at which the first group of vaccinated persons became fully vaccinated). A total of 685,376 persons have been fully vaccinated, representing 49% of the population. Meanwhile, 714,624 persons are not fully vaccinated (only received a first dose or no doses), representing 51% of the population. 106,294 persons in total have taken a booster shot. Based on data from 22nd July 2021 - 5th January 2022, 1,914 patients in the parallel healthcare system (Hospitals and step-down facilities) are fully vaccinated, representing 15%, while 10,863 are not fully vaccinated, representing 85%. In a Media Release on Monday evening (24th January 2022), the Ministry of Education said it has held several consultation meetings with stakeholders over the past three (3) months regarding the operations of schools in Term II 2021/2022. The Ministry said that while there are many different views on the return to physical school and how it should be implemented, “the major concerns center around the safety of all school personnel, and the quality of life and education to which the children of Trinidad and Tobago are exposed.” The Ministry continued, “It is established that physical teaching and learning is most effective for our ECCE, primary and secondary school students, but this must be achieved in a manner that is deemed both safe and logistically practical. The results of the SEA and CXC examinations in 2021, when compared with those of 2020, have shown decreases in student performance consistent with the learning loss predicted due to the absence of students from the physical classroom during the Pandemic. The results of the Diagnostic Tests in Math and English Language which all public schools administered in October 2021 also identified gaps in student achievement across levels in these fundamental areas.” Since March 2020, teaching and learning has taken place mainly using the online modality. The Ministry notes that the Government has approached physical attendance of students using a phased, incremental approach, allowing administrators to develop and adjust policies, systems for monitoring and school operations on small cohorts to avoid overwhelming the system. Students of Forms 4 - 6 have attended school physically from February - July 2021 and October - December 2021, and are still in physical attendance at this time. The Ministry states that in addition, “physical examinations, involving thousands of our students, have been held for SEA in 2020 and 2021, as well as CSEC and CAPE, held in June 2020, January 2021, June 2021, and, most recently, January 2022.” According to the Ministry, the conduct of physical school and examinations in Trinidad and Tobago during the Pandemic “has been challenging, as it is globally. It has required the understanding and co-operation of all school personnel, including parents, and adjustments to school operations which promote safety.” The Ministry said these include:
The Ministry said it remains committed to working with and learning from all stakeholders and making decisions in the best interest of the Nation's children. In light of all considerations, the Ministry has taken the following decisions regarding the physical re-opening of schools in Term II 2021/22:
On the basis of the decisions taken above, the Ministry states that detailed Guidelines will be sent to schools via Circular Memorandum, and made available to the public, “as the co-operation of parents continues to be crucial to the operations of schools, especially in this time of transition.” The Government maintains the position that COVID-19 vaccines are available, and continue to be the best protection against becoming grievously ill if students contract the virus. The Ministry added, “Parents are therefore strongly encouraged to vaccinate eligible children as they return to the classroom.” The Media Release concluded by saying, “The Ministry lauds the efforts of all staff, stakeholders, parents, teachers, middle management, and Principals as Trinidad and Tobago seeks to offer the best educational opportunities possible, in the time of the pandemic, to our children. Our continued co-operation and commitment during this transitionary period will be critical for the best outcomes.” This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
