UPDATE: Point Fortin MP Kennedy Richards is urging motorists to be cautious on the new Highway extension to Point Fortin following the deaths of two (2) persons in an accident. Speaking at the Commissioning of the Highway this morning, Richards, who is also a pilot, urged motorists to obey the speed limit, not use the roads to race and leave the flying to him.
Two (2) persons are dead and two (2) others seriously injured following a head-on collision along the Archibald-De Leon Highway in the La Brea area last night (Friday 13th October 2023). The deceased have been identified as 29-year-old Ottis Roach of Sobo Village, La Brea and 39-year-old Kerlan Sutherland of Parry Lands, Guapo. The accident occurred around 11:20 PM, hours before a segment of the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway extension to Point Fortin was formally opened by politicians.
Sutherland was the front-seat passenger of a grey Sunny B15, driven by Roach. Meanwhile, 33-year-old Keeghan Baptiste of South Oropouche, was driving a black Mitsubishi Lancer, with front-seat passenger, 35-year-old Telson Ross of La Brea, heading in the opposite direction. Upon nearing #8 Road, Baptiste saw the grey B15 heading towards him in his lane, and both vehicles collided head-on. Roach and Sutherland died on the spot while Baptiste and Ross were taken to Hospital for medical treatment.
The segment of the Highway was formally opened this morning (Saturday 14th October 2023) at the Dunlop Roundabout, which connects San Fernando to Point Fortin, reducing the journey to thirty (30) minutes.
Prime Minister Keith Rowley, Minister of Works and Transport, Rohan Sinanan and others were present to officially open the completed segment.
Recently completed segments, located in the vicinity of St. Mary’s Junction to Mon Desir, Eccles Trace to La Brea and Southern Main Road to the Dunlop Roundabout, Point Fortin, comprise the completion of an additional 12.5 Km of roadway and will open the Point Fortin leg. This marks the achievement of a significant milestone under the SHHE Project, which will bring immediate enhancement to the movement of persons and goods between San Fernando and Point Fortin.
