The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) is warning citizens there may be a temporary loss of electricity across Trinidad on Sunday 8th December 2019 between 7am to 3pm. They are also urging customers to conserve electricity during this time.
T&TEC explained this has become necessary as the National Gas Company (NGC) conducts expansion work on its network which could affect NGC’s supply of gas to the Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU) Power Station. In the unlikely event that this work affects the gas supply, there may be a temporary loss of electricity across Trinidad. T&TEC is therefore appealing to customers to minimise their use of non-essential, high-energy appliances and equipment, such as Air Conditioning Units, Dryers and Water Heaters, to reduce the risk of Load Shedding on Sunday. See their Media Release below from T&TEC and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is once again appealing to citizens to conserve water as it announces it has increased the number of its Security Officers to ensure customers observe water restrictions. These restrictions prohibit the use of water hoses, pressure washers, decorative water features and other similar apparatus until further notice.
WASA notes that storage at its three (3) main impounding reservoirs in Trinidad is still significantly below the long-term average (LTA) for this time of year. Storage levels and their respective LTAs at the reservoirs as of 5th December 2019 are as follows:
WASA said after the harsh 2019 Dry Season, the reservoirs' recovery was slow because of below-average rainfall throughout the Wet Season.

The Ministry of Works and Transport is advising motorists that there will be a temporary traffic disruption this weekend, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December 2019, along several areas of the Northbound and Southbound lanes of the Uriah Butler Highway. The hours of disruption will be between 7am to 7pm on both days.

The Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago has announced the introduction of a new $100 bill as legal tender, effective from 9th December 2019.
The new bill is based on a polymer substrate and has significantly enhanced security features. It will co-circulate with the existing paper-based $100 note, which will remain as legal tender until further notice. All persons who are in possession of the existing $100 notes will be required to exchange them for new notes. Minister of National Security, Stuart Young, announced Government's plan to roll out the new $100 bill at a Post-Cabinet press briefing on Thursday 5th December 2019. Minister Young explained that this new measure will assist in the fight against corruption as criminal elements must now present their old $100 bills in order for them to be exchanged and in so doing, explain where the money came from.

UPDATE (05/12/19): Minister of Finance, Colm Imbert, is taking an active role in trying to resolve the impasse between Paria and Unipet. Minister Imbert revealed in Parliament that Unipet currently owes Paria over $100 Million for fuel it has received. He is confident that a swift resolution can be reached between both parties.
Paria Fuel Trading Company Limited has taken a decision to stop providing Unipet with fuel effective today, Tuesday 3rd December 2019. Their decision stems from the failure of both companies to renegotiate a Supply Agreement since April 2019. Unipet has also failed to pay for its fuel supply from Paria in September and October 2019.
In its announcement, Paria notes that there is no shortage of fuel and also stated that the failure of Unipet to pay monies when due has the potential to affect Paria’s ability to procure fuel from its suppliers. Paria will make available to the National Petroleum Marketing Company (NP) the difference in the quantity of fuel required to meet the country’s full needs. NP will distribute the full supply so that the motoring public should see no disruption.
As T&T’s largest Service Station Network Operator, NP is assuring the public that they are more than capable of providing a continuous and reliable supply of fuel across the country.
Additionally, with an extensive service station network of over 115 stations and a supply chain that distributes fuel seven days a week, NP has the resources necessary to meet the increased demands and to ensure the reliability of the supply to all customers.
NP is also advising drivers that they should continue their normal purchasing patterns for fuel and avoid panic-buying, which would only cause fuel shortages at the Pump and create unnecessary congestion at Service Stations.
Paria said it is willing to continue discussions with Unipet to achieve a solution that is both safe and in the best interest of both companies and which minimizes any disruption of supply to the local market.
The final results for the Local Government Election, held on Monday 2nd December 2019, showed both political parties won the same number of seats (7 each).
However, it is the United National Congress (UNC) that has more to celebrate, having now gained control of the marginal seat of Sangre Grande - which forced a tie. Prior to these results, the People’s National Movement (PNM) held 8 seats and the UNC held 6. Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley admitted the Sangre Grande loss was “an element of disappointment but not a calamity.” All I’ll say is local government elections and general elections are not the same.
At the San Fernando Corporation where the PNM previously held all 12 seats, the UNC has now won 3 seats – Marabella South/Vistabella, Marabella East and Les Efforts West/La Romain. The UNC also won the seat of Enterprise South/Longdenville North on the UNC-held Chaguanas Corporation. The PNM won the Cocoyea/Tarouba seat by just one vote ahead of the UNC (1,043 to 1,042 seats).
Addressing supporters at her Penal Office, UNC Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar called the results “an overall victory.” The people have spoken. Today we saw democracy in action. The UNC fought hard and we are proud of the 139 candidates who put themselves forward. We have made inroads in many areas and this is a result of the hard work that our activists and supporters put into the campaign, on the ground and in the communities.
See a breakdown of the results for both political parties below and stay tuned for updates.
