Following Prime Minister Keith Rowley’s letter to Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar on 16th September 2023, the Prime Minister provided an update this evening (Tuesday 26th September 2023) on the status of his invitation to have bilateral talks, focused on the escalating crime situation in the country.
According to Prime Minister Rowley, “Having received a voluminous seven (7) page reply from the Opposition Leader, I deliberately chose to focus on what could be extracted as elements of public interest in keeping with my invitation to have bilateral talks. The Opposition’s voluminous response contains an appendix of suggested issues to which the Government will add and respond by outlining additional matters to be raised by the Government.” He added, “When this is done there will then be an agenda of work for the suggested eight (8) person Committee. The Government will ignore all fictional inclusions and engage with the Opposition on the facts and possibilities of all the identifiable situations. The Government team will be named in the coming days and the actual engagements will take place after the budget debates are concluded. In the interim, there could be a further exchange of documents as initially suggested.” In his letter to Mrs. Persad-Bissessar on 16th September 2023, the Prime Minister said, “In keeping with our mutual desire to put our country’s national interest first, I invite you, as Leader of the Opposition, to participate in the following exercise which is aimed at exploring the options available to us, as Parliamentarians, to address the matter of the safety and security of the population of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.” The Prime Minister continued in his letter, “I would like to receive from you, in writing, your proposal(s) which you believe are worthy of bipartisan discussions between the Government and the Opposition. The Government is also prepared to share with you its own ideas, programs and policies for inclusion in these discussions. It is envisaged that your proposal(s), like the Government’s, would include tools designed to lawfully confront the criminal elements that are increasingly emboldened, as they operate in Trinidad and Tobago. I propose that after receiving your proposal, we establish teams comprising four (4) members each, from both the Government and the Opposition, to discuss the initiatives proposed. These teams will be guided by a crafted agenda formed from our joint submissions which I anticipate we could have in hand within the coming fortnight.” Read the letter in its entirety here.
