Senator the Honourable Hassel Bacchus, Minister of Digital Transformation, led a team of Officials from his Ministry on a strategic visit to India from 6th to 11th August 2023. The purpose was to advance bilateral co-operation in the areas of Digital Transformation and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
According to a Media Release today (Tuesday 29th August 2023) from the Ministry of Digital Transformation (MDT), through a series of engagements with public and private institutions, knowledge and experiences were shared in the areas of Digital Identity, Digital Payments, Digital Service Transformation, Digital Public Infrastructure, and Digital Public Goods. MoU Signed The Ministry said the long-term goal of this exchange is to strengthen Trinidad and Tobago's position in the global e-governance arena. This resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two (2) countries on Friday 11th August 2023. The MoU will facilitate bilateral co-operation and the exchange of experiences and digital technology-based solutions between the two (2) countries. The MoU was signed by Shri Sushil Pal, Joint Secretary on behalf of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and His Excellency Dr. Roger Gopaul, Trinidad and Tobago's High Commissioner to India. A significant outcome is that it allows for the sharing of India Stack — India's collection of public solutions and services that facilitate digital identity, data, and payment services on a massive scale. In responding to this momentous occasion, Minister Bacchus highlighted this collaborative endeavour, saying, “Our countries' shared vision of harnessing the power of technology to uplift citizens will create a brighter future in which they are active participants in and contributors to the digital society and economy.” Similarly, highlighting the significance of the India Stack offerings, Mos Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who believes in the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbhakam (the world is one family), has always encouraged the offering of India Stack to countries across the globe, especially to those that have been left behind in their digitalization efforts. With the help of India Stack, these countries can climb up the digitalization ladder rapidly and transform their economies and governance.” He added, “It shall create a robust ecosystem of startups, developers and system integrators working around it on next-gen innovation.” Benefits to T&T The MoU will provide technical co-operation in the areas of digital transformation through the exchange of leading practices, knowledge transfer and sharing, capacity building, and the adoption of technology solutions The partnership transcends beyond mere adoption of technology, into a transferal of expertise, experience, and lessons learned as Trinidad and Tobago forges towards a digital future. The MDT emphasizes its commitment to propelling Trinidad and Tobago into a technologically advanced era that will benefit citizens, businesses, and the economy as a whole. India - A Leader in Digital Government Within the last decade, India has secured its position as an international leader in the areas of Digital Identity, Digital Payments, Digital Service Transformation, Digital Public Infrastructure, and Digital Public Goods. Consequently, having noted India's significant accomplishments, the MDT has identified the Government of India as a key partner for advancing its development objectives. Moreover, the Government of India has signaled a willingness to share its solutions and know-how with the Global South. The country has also signed similar MoUs with several developing countries across the world.

Pictured Above: A Police Officer at the scene of the accident. Photo Credit: Jermaine Cruickshank. A woman lost her life following an accident along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway yesterday morning (Monday 28th August 2023). The deceased has been identified as 71-year-old Claudia Hicks of Talparo.
According to reports, Hicks was a passenger in a silver Nissan Wingroad, which was proceeding along the Highway around 10:30 AM. Upon nearing Popeye’s, the driver is said to have lost control of her vehicle, causing it to veer off the shoulder and into a ditch. Hicks was thrown from the vehicle and landed in the ditch. The Wingroad then rolled over her, killing her almost instantly. The driver and front seat passenger were both taken to the Mount Hope Hospital for medical treatment. Investigations are continuing. A Belmont woman has appeared before an Arima Magistrate, charged with the murder of 45-year-old Reagan Henderson Reece of Arouca, who was last seen alive on 22nd June 2023, in the Arouca district.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), 25-year-old Alima Reid, aka ‘Shorts,’ an inmate of the Arouca Women’s Prison, was charged with the offence after Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI) Region II Officers executed a warrant at the prison on Monday 21st August 2023. She later appeared before an Arima Magistrate on Tuesday 22nd August 2023. She had been previously charged with conspiracy to commit murder on 24th July 2023 and was reprimanded at the Arouca Prison. On Sunday 23rd July 2023, HBI Region II Officers discovered the body of Reece in a bushy area at Palm Drive, Windy Hill. Investigations into the matter were supervised by ASP Victor, Insp. John, and Sgt. Radhaykissoon, all of HBI Region II. Reid was charged with murder by WPC Theroulde, also of HBI Region II, after further advice was received from Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Roger Gaspard SC, on Tuesday 8th August 2023. The partially decomposed body of a man was found in Longdenville, Chaguanas, yesterday morning (Monday 28th August 2023). The deceased is believed to be 58-year-old Vishnu Ortega.
According to reports, residents of Ram Trace detected a strong odour in the area, and upon investigating, observed the body of a man lying on the ground of his home around 11:10 AM. Police were notified and a team of Officers responded to the scene, led by WPC Beckles. Due to the condition of the body, a post mortem was ordered to confirm the cause of death. Bob Barker, the iconic American game show host and animal rights activist, died peacefully at his home on Saturday morning (26th August 2023) in Los Angeles, California. Barker was ninety-nine (99) and is said to have died of natural causes. CBS issued the following statement on Saturday following news of Barker’s death: “We lost a beloved member of the CBS family today with the passing of Bob Barker. During his 35 years as host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT, Bob made countless people’s dreams come true and everyone feel like a winner when they were called to ‘come on down.’ In addition to his legendary 50-year career in broadcasting, Bob will be remembered as a dedicated animal rights activist. Daytime television has lost one of its most iconic stars.” The longtime host of ‘The Price Is Right’ actually got his start in game shows after legendary producer Ralph Edwards discovered him while listening to Barker’s radio show and hired him for TV. Barker started off hosting the iconic hit, ‘Truth or Consequences,’ back in 1956, in which he starred until 1975. He also hosted a number of other game shows and programs over the years, including ‘Dream Girl of '67,’ ‘Tattletales,’ ‘Miss Universe,’ and most famously, ‘The Price is Right,’ which he produced and hosted until 2007. Drew Carey then took over as host and the show continues to be extremely popular to this day. Barker has appeared in several other TV shows and films over the years, starring as himself in many of them. He got into a fight with Adam Sandler in ‘Happy Gilmore,’ stood in as Neil Patrick Harris' would-be biological father in ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ and played himself in other shows like ‘Futurama,’ ‘Spongebob,’ ‘The Nanny,’ ‘Martial Law’ and many others.
He had several minor bouts of skin cancer over the years, and suffered a serious fall in 2015 and 2017 that sent him to the Emergency Room. He fell again in 2019, and was treated once more at Hospital. He was also transported via Ambulance twice in 2018 for back issues. RIP, Bob. The Ministry notes that during hot weather, remember to check on family, particularly the elderly and children, as very high temperatures can be dangerous to one's health. A Hospital Attendant is dead following a brazen shooting incident in broad daylight this morning (Monday 28th August 2023) in the parking lot of his workplace in Arima. The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Marvin Safe, an employee of the Arima Health Facility. According to reports, Safe was driving his car into the parking lot of the Arima Health Facility around 6:30 AM, when a black Nissan X-Trail drove alongside his vehicle. The X-Trail was said to have followed him to his workplace. A gunman from the X-Trail opened fire on Safe’s vehicle, hitting him several times about the body before driving off on Queen Mary Avenue. Security guards at the compound notified Police and Officers of the Northern Division Task Force and the Arima CID responded to the scene. A District Medical Officer (DMO) was also called in, who pronounced Safe as deceased.
Also on the scene was the victim’s father, Hugh Safe, who said his son lived with him and was known only to go to work and return home, and to his knowledge, his son was not involved in any nefarious activities. [Source: CNC3] A man is dead and a 9-year-old girl wounded following a shooting incident at his home in Caura last night (Sunday 27th August 2023). The deceased has been identified as 41-year-old Carlton Elias, a suspected marijuana planter of Tumbasound Road, Caura.
According to reports, Elias had just arrived at his home shortly before 12:00 AM, when he was ambushed by two (2) assailants in camouflage clothing. He was shot multiple times about the body, while a 9-year-old girl was shot in the left arm. Relatives heard several loud explosions and upon investigating, found Elias’ body. He was already deceased. Crime scene investigators recovered a shotgun cartridge and a cutlass. Meanwhile, another murder was recorded in Arima this morning (Monday 28th August 2023), in which Marvin Safe was shot dead. The murder toll for this year now stands at 386. A motorcyclist is dead after a tragic accident near South Park, San Fernando, this morning (Monday 28th August 2023), in which his motorcycle crashed into a fuel truck. The deceased has been identified as Ezekiel Maharaj, of Chatham Village, Cedros.
According to reports, Maharaj was driving near the traffic lights at South Park, Tarouba, around 9:00 AM, when he attempted to overtake a truck transporting fuel. However, his motorcycle collided with the left side of the truck during the maneuver. The impact of the collision propelled Maharaj onto the road surface, and his motorcycle slid beneath the left side of the truck. Eyewitnesses said the motorcycle collided with the truck with such force, that it caused the fuel tank of Maharaj’s motorcycle to detach, triggering a fire. Police and Fire Officers from the nearby Mon Repos Fire headquarters responded to the scene of the crash and extinguished the blaze from the detached fuel tank.
