She also advised citizens to moderate alcohol intake as more than two (2) drinks per day for men and one (1) drink per day for women is considered excessive and may lead to health problems. - The Chief Nutritionist also stated that 2 – 2 ½ litres of water per day is recommended for adults and sugar sweetened drinks are not recommended for hydration. Michael B. Jordan, who has starred in blockbuster movies such as “Black Panther” and “Creed” launched his own brand of rum over the weekend. The problem with that, is he decided to name it “J’Ouvert” and applied to have the name trademarked. Following the launch, social media exploded with negative comments, especially from many local and regional nationals who felt Jordan was culturally appropriating the “J’Ouvert” name for his own benefits. An Instagram user from Trinidad and Tobago, Xaria Rae Roxburgh (@xara_rae) sought to educate everyone about the origins of “J’Ouvert,” which was later shared by none other than Trini-born superstar, Onika Maraj-Petty, aka “Nicki Minaj.” Xaria said the following in her post: THE IGNORANCE IS REAL! HISTORY LESSON Y'AII! While sharing Xaria’s explanation of “J’Ouvert” on her Instagram account with over 142 Million followers, Nicki Minaj chimed in on the controversy and asked Jordan to change the name of his rum. She said, “I'm sure MBJ didn't intentionally do anything he thought Caribbean ppl would find offensive but now that you are aware, change the name & continue to flourish & prosper.“ It seems Jordan got the message loud and clear from Minaj and many others, as the actor took to his Instagram story on Tuesday to issue an apology: “I just wanna say on behalf of myself & my partners, our intention was never to offend or hurt a culture (we love & respect) & hoped to celebrate & shine a positive light on. Last few days has been a lot of listening. A lot of learning & engaging in countless community conversations...we hear you. I hear you & want to be clear that we are in the process of renaming. We sincerely apologize & look forward to introducing a brand we can all be proud of.” Many expressed their happiness with Jordan’s announcement on social media. One person tweeted: “This is a win for all those who spoke up and a major win to Trinbagonian people.” Another wrote: “The fact that MBJ is going back to the drawing board to rename is fantastic.” [Source: CNC3]

The Bill was passed with twenty-four (24) votes in favour, none against and six (6) abstentions. It was passed with amendments, despite failing to attract support from the Opposition. Minister of Finance, Colm Imbert, said the Gambling (Gaming and Betting) Control Bill 2021 was almost a 'mirror image' of the 2015 legislation which was debated and passed in the House of Representatives by the People's Partnership administration. However, this legislation lapsed on 17th June 2016. The Bill seeks to provide for the regulation and control of gaming and betting and other related matters. Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, Randall Mitchell said the cost of leaving the gambling sector unregulated outweighs the cost of shutting it down altogether. He made the comments in the Senate during debate of the Bill in Parliament on Monday. “The most important factors in the decision of any country to legalize the gambling sector are the economic and social benefit to be derived from the industry,” he said. Mitchell also noted, “The consideration for Trinidad and Tobago was the extremely high cost of leaving the sector unregulated or the extremely high cost of shutting down a thriving sector with 7,000 plus workers when compared to the potential of the gambling industry to contribute significant value to the economy and to the tourism and hospitality sectors.” These sectors, he said, will be improved by the development of the gambling sector. The tourism and hospitality sectors, which have been severely battered by the COVID-19 Pandemic, normally contributes over $15 Billion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) every year and employs over 6,000 people. Mitchell said this country did not have the options that other countries have to regulate gambling so that it would be for the tourism sector only. While addressing the negative impacts of gambling, Mitchell said, “The horse has already bolted. It is here and it has been here for the last 20 years.” He further stated, “We understand there is a problem, but supporting this Bill is also supporting the rehabilitation fund that supports non-profit organizations (NGOs) in the rehabilitation of people affected with problem gambling.” Mitchell said the Bill also sought to support the collection of taxes which was not happening. “The Board of Inland Revenue (BIR) has reported there are thousands of unregistered gambling machines upon which taxes are payable and not collected and they are unable to easily enforce or even enter upon these private members clubs to conduct audits.” According to Mitchell, the Bill will allow for the collection of the estimated $500 Million owed in taxes annually. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, revealed yesterday (Monday 21st June 2021) during the Ministry of Health’s virtual Press Conference that there is a possible second case of Vaccine-Induced Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia (VITT) in Trinidad and Tobago. Dr. Parasram said confirmation of this second case was expected any day now. “There is a second person that we think fits the criteria that only came to light about a day ago. That is still under investigation. It seems likely that it may be another case of that syndrome. So that will be two cases of that syndrome if it is confirmed hopefully by the end of today or thereabouts.” The first confirmed case of VITT was announced by the CMO during the Prime Minister’s Press Conference on 29th May 2021. That patient had been administered the AstraZeneca vaccine and is said to be under the care of haematologist Dr. Kenneth Charles as well as their private physician. VITT is associated with both the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. The condition has not been reported in people who have received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Speaking on the rarity of VITT, the CMO noted yesterday that around 4 in 1 Million people usually develop this condition. Regarding the condition of both patients, he said up to yesterday, “They are both well.” These cases would have been reported to the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO). Dr. Parasram also indicated yesterday that some persons had developed mild allergic-type reactions around ten (10) to fifteen (15) minutes after receiving their vaccine. He said these persons were treated and discharged. He also reported that T&T had not recorded any vaccine-related deaths so far. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
