On 18th March, 2024, at approximately 2:30 AM, Police received a report of a break-in at a credit union where men were seen loading a safe into a white-coloured panel van in Barataria. Officers responded to the scene, and upon arrival, they observed a white-coloured Nissan Caravan and a man seated in the driver’s seat. The Officers approached the driver and identified themselves. However, the driver behaved suspiciously, causing the Officers to search the vehicle. A vehicle search was conducted and revealed a gas tank, an oxygen tank with a red-coloured hose and a green-coloured hose attached, a blow torch, a pick-axe, a pig-foot and a Total pipe wrench. Williams was asked about the items discovered in the vehicle, but he could not provide a reasonable response. The Officers then made their way into the credit union and found certain rooms ransacked and other things of evidential value. A man is dead following a robbery at his home in Diego Martin early this morning (Thursday 28th March, 2024). The deceased has been identified as 60-year-old shopkeeper Steve Harding, of Salandy Street, Diego Martin.
According to reports, Steve, who lived alone, was found around 3:30 AM at his home by his brother-in-law, who lives upstairs.
The visibly shaken sister of the murdered man, Bridget Harding, spoke to Newsday at his shop and described him as quiet and peaceful. She said her son, who sleeps in a room next to Steve's apartment, woke up around 3:00 AM to muffled sounds. He left his room to investigate and a gunman pointed a gun at him and ordered him back to his room, where he was tied up with duct tape. Her son waited until he heard the four (4) gunmen leave before shouting for help. Bridget’s husband, Junior McCloud, heard the screams and went to check on him. He saw his son tied up and after freeing him, both men went to check on Steve. They saw his front door open and called out to him, but he did not answer. The men went into Steve's apartment, where they found him lying with his hands tied behind his back and his head covered with duct tape. Police believe Steve may have suffocated during the robbery, as both his mouth and nose were covered. His sister called the crime situation “ridiculous” and did not believe the Police would solve her brother's murder. “They took an innocent man's life. He would have celebrated his 61st birthday in June,” she lamented. Bridget said she is shaken up and fearful for her own life. Investigations are continuing. More on this as it becomes available. UPDATE 4: Kiss Baking Company Limited released the following statement following the death of its employee, Neil Ballai:
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our colleague and friend, Neil Ballai, who passed away on Friday March 28, 2024 in a vehicular accident.
UPDATE 3: Police have located the Hyundai Ioniq and arrested the hit-and-run driver, who is said to have several traffic infractions against his name, including for driving while holding a cellphone, and driving without valid insurance.
UPDATE 2: The Hyundai Ioniq sedan (PDR 7741) responsible for hitting the Kiss truck from behind is said to be registered to a Jelani Mapp of Erica Street in Laventille.
UPDATE: The driver of the Kiss truck is confirmed to have died in this hit-and-run road traffic accident.
According to reports, a Kiss Baking Company truck ran off the Southbound lane of the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway a short while ago this morning (Thursday 28th March, 2024), in the vicinity of the Ato Boldon Stadium.
At least one person is said to be unresponsive at the scene of the crash, in a possible fatality. The man has been identified as 55-year-old Neil Ballai, of Eccles Trace in Spring Village, Valsayn.
Dash-cam footage of the crash shows a black Hyundai Ioniq sedan swerving between lanes and smashing into the rear of a Kiss delivery truck, sending it careening into a ditch off the Highway. The Isuzu truck landed on its side, pinning Ballai, the driver. Riding along with him in the truck was 34-year-old Terrance Jagasar, of Cumuto Main Road, Cumuto. He sustained injuries and was attended to by Emergency Health Services personnel before being transported to the Couva Health Facility for further medical treatment.
The black Hyundai Ioniq, however, did not stop to render assistance to the occupants of the Kiss truck — it continued traveling along the Highway, with the bonnet dislodged and blocking the view of the driver. The driver was somehow able to exit the Highway at the off-ramp of the Preysal Overpass, and was last seen driving East towards Mission Road or Gran Couva. The video footage is being used to help identify the driver, who fled the scene.
The accident caused a build-up of traffic this morning on the Northbound lane of the Highway from the Couva Flyover.
