Two-time Olympic cyclist Njisane Phillip was granted $300,000 approval bail on Monday (27th March 2023), with a cash alternative of $30,000, after being charged with firearm and marijuana offences. The 31-year-old retired national cyclist appeared virtually before Senior Magistrate Armina Deonarinesingh in the San Fernando Court on three (3) charges, including possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and possession of marijuana.
The Magistrate ordered Phillip to surrender his Trinidad and Tobago and United States Passports and report to the Siparia Police Station every Wednesday. According to reports, the Olympian was arrested around 5:00 PM on Saturday (25th March 2023), after he was pulled over by Police for allegedly speeding along the the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, near Gandhi Village in Debe. While interviewing him, the Officer allegedly got a strong scent of marijuana coming from his vehicle. His vehicle was then searched and Officers allegedly found sixty-two (62) grammes of marijuana and a firearm with a magazine containing four (4) rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition. Phillip, of Siparia, was arrested and taken to the South Highway Patrol Unit in Debe, where he was charged by PC Sankar. He was represented in Court by Attorney Cedric Neptune. A 53-year-old man was shot and killed by gunmen on Monday night (27th March 2023) in Santa Cruz, while three (3) others suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The deceased has been identified as Fitzgerald Alfred, a bartender. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Hospital.
According to reports, Alfred was liming in the yard of a friend’s house on Blazney Road, Upper Santa Cruz, when three (3) men walked in from the road around 10:00 PM and shot at the group. Nearby residents heard several loud explosions and called the Police. The wounded men were taken to Hospital, where Alfred was declared dead around 10:43 PM. Two (2) of the survivors are said to be ages twenty-six (26) and twenty-two (22). Investigators do not believe Alfred was the intended target of the gunmen. Officers from the Santa Cruz Police Station and the Special Evidence Recovery Unit (SERU) found five (5) spent 9mm shells and eleven (11) spent 7.62mm shells at the scene — the latter of which are used in assault rifles. [Source: Newsday] The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) has provided additional hotline numbers to ensure efficient service to SEA Exam Centres on exam day (Wednesday 29th March 2023).
T&TEC is advising Principals and Supervisors who experience problems with electricity before or on the day of the exam, to call the T&TEC hotline at 794-4823 or 794-7264 from 12:00 PM on Monday 27th March 2023 to 3:00 PM on Wednesday 29th March 2023. Principals and Supervisors can also call 800-TTEC (800-8832) or 800 BULB (800-2852) at any time. The Ministry of Works and Transport is advising the public that there will be a temporary traffic disruption along the Tarouba Link Road, from Tarouba Overpass to Naparima Mayaro Road, San Fernando. This disruption will take place from today (Monday 27th March 2023) and is expected to be completed on Good Friday (7th April 2023). The Ministry said this has become necessary to facilitate road rehabilitation works.

A man was shot dead in Caroni on Sunday night (26th March 2023). The deceased has been identified as Marvin Marcano. According to reports, Marcano was seen walking along Rabindranath Trace in Kelly Village, when residents heard a series of explosions around 8:45 PM. Upon investigating, they found Marcano lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
Next to him was another man who was bleeding from a gunshot wound to his right hand. Police and Paramedics were notified, however, Marcano succumbed to his wounds at the scene. The other victim was taken for medical treatment at the Chaguanas District Hospital. His condition was said to be stable up to Monday morning. Investigations are continuing. [Source: Loop] The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is advising customers in parts of South West Trinidad, served by the Chatham Water Treatment Plant, who are currently experiencing a disruption in their water supply, that this is due to mechanical problems impacting operations at Wells #2 and #7.

UPDATE 2: No known motive for the shooting has yet been established, although it is known that Hale was a former student at The Covenant School. Her parents also told investigators that she had been receiving treatment for an emotional disorder. UPDATE: The shooter has been identified as 28-year-old Audrey Hale. She brought three (3) guns to The Covenant School, a private grade school in Nashville, and opened fire. Hale killed six (6) people — three (3) students, each 9-years-old, a substitute teacher, a custodian and the head of the school. Police responded within minutes of the first 911 call alerting them to an active shooter on the Christian school campus, and Officers killed Hale soon after arriving. At least three (3) children and three (3) adults are dead following a shooting at a private Nashville grade school on Monday (27th March 2023). The shooter, a 28-year-old female, is also dead, authorities said. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said on Twitter that the “active shooter event” at The Covenant School ended with the shooter dead after being “engaged” by Police. Three (3) “pediatric patients” with gunshot wounds were transferred to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, according to Medical Center Spokesperson, Craig Boerner. “All three were pronounced dead after arrival,” Boerner said. Authorities confirmed later that three (3) adults had died. According to Nashville Police Spokesman Don Aaron, the shooter had two (2) rifles and a handgun. Authorities initially said the shooter appeared to be a teen, then Police tweeted that she was a Nashville woman. She had attended The Covenant School at some point, Nashville Police Chief John Drake said during a Press Conference. He was unsure about the years during which she was a student at the school. Two (2) Officers shot the assailant on the second floor of the building, according to the Police Department’s Twitter account.

The deceased has been identified as Narine Singh, a labourer of Charlo Village, Penal.
According to reports, Singh was asleep downstairs in his apartment with his 58-year-old wife, when they were alerted to a strange noise around 12:05 AM. Singh went to check on the noise, which sounded like a louve pane being pryed open near a bathroom. His wife reportedly heard him shout, “Who is that dey?” before several loud explosions were heard. Singh was found unresponsive and bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds. Upon hearing the gunshots, neighbours immediately notified Police and Paramedics. Singh, however, succumbed to his wounds at the scene. Crime Scene Investigators recovered six (6) nine-millimetre spent shells and a projectile at the scene. Officers of the South-Western Division and Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI) Region III responded to the scene. No motive for Singh’s brutal killing has yet been established. A woman miraculously escaped with her life after being struck by an oncoming vehicle in Mc Bean, Couva, on Saturday evening (25th March 2023). She reportedly walked away with minor injuries, according to Police.
The frightening incident, captured on CCTV and posted on social media, shows a woman and a man attempting to cross the road, when a fast-moving white pick-up truck veers off the roadway and slams into the couple. The vehicle appears to run over the woman. She was seen being thrown backwards until the vehicle came to a halt, crashing into a car parked along the roadside, which also crashed into another vehicle.
The pick-up truck was speeding in the vicinity of a popular food spot off the Southern Main Road at around 8:30 PM, before it swerved into the pedestrians.
Speaking to the Express in a telephone interview on Sunday, an Officer from the Couva Police Station said the accident was not fatal, as the woman had survived being struck by the vehicle. “She got minor injuries and was discharged. The woman is alive, not sure how well but she was discharged. She was at the side of the road and the vehicle ran into her,” said an Officer who did not want to be named. The headline and body of this article have since been updated. A 14-year-old boy was shot dead by gunmen on Saturday night (25th March 2023) in Valencia, while two (2) others were wounded. They remained warded at Hospital up to Sunday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Kyle Paul, a Third Form student at Coryal High School.
According to reports, Paul was playing football with friends at KP Lands, Valencia Savannah, around 8:00 PM, when a silver hatchback vehicle pulled up nearby. A number of gunmen, dressed in black, alighted from the vehicle and began firing into the savannah. Those present, including Paul, attempted to scamper for safety by running off in different directions. The boy, however, was trapped in a cricket net and attempted to escape though a narrow space, but was cornered and shot in the upper body and legs. Two (2) others were also hit by bullets. All three (3) were taken to Hospital and Paul was pronounced dead while being treated. Investigators said he lived a short distance away from where the incident took place. One of the injured victims, a 26-year-old man, was said to be listed in critical condition. The gunmen re-entered their vehicle and sped off after carrying out the brutal attack.
