Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Franklin Khan, addressed the Senate on Tuesday (19th January 2021) to provide specific details on the upcoming liberalization of the fuels market. The discussion covered, among other matters, the topics of LPG subsidies and the retail price of LPG tanks used for cooking gas.
The statements made by Minister Franklin Khan in relation to the international prices of LPG were to reiterate that the retail price of LPG on the domestic market is heavily subsidized. The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries is advising the general public that ONLY the pricing mechanism at which the National Petroleum Marketing Company Limited (NPMC) purchases LPG for supply to the local market is being considered for adjustment at this time so that it is reflective of market prices on an ongoing basis. When this pricing is adjusted, NPMC will continue to provide LPG to the local market at a significantly lower price than the purchase price. In this regard, the anticipated extra cost for LPG will continue to be borne by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago by way of the Petroleum Production Levy and Subsidy Act, and will not be borne by the general public. The Minister of Energy and Energy Industries is therefore assuring the general public that the retail price of LPG tanks used for cooking gas will remain at the current price of TT $21.00 for a 20lb tank and TT $105.00 for a 100lb tank (plus TT $25 for transport and handling costs for the 100 lb cylinder). Larry King, the longtime CNN host who became an icon through his interviews, has died at age 87. His son, Chance, confirmed King's death on Saturday morning (23rd January 2021). King hosted "Larry King Live" on CNN for over twenty-five (25) years, interviewing Presidential candidates, celebrities, athletes, movie stars and everyday people. A statement announcing his death was posted on his verified Facebook account. With profound sadness, Ora Media announces the death of our co-founder, host and friend Larry King, who passed away this morning at age 87 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. For 63 years and across the platforms of radio, television and digital media, Larry's many thousands of interviews, awards, and global acclaim stand as a testament to his unique and lasting talent as a broadcaster. While the statement did not give a cause of death, King battled a number of health problems over the years, including suffering several heart attacks. In 1987, he underwent quintuple bypass surgery, inspiring him to establish the Larry King Cardiac Foundation to provide assistance to those without insurance. More recently, King revealed in 2017 that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer and successfully underwent surgery to treat it. He also underwent a procedure in 2019 to address angina. He was hospitalized with COVID-19 in late December 2020 at Cedars-Sinai, a source close to the family said at the time. "We mourn the passing of our colleague Larry King," CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a statement. The scrappy young man from Brooklyn had a history-making career spanning radio and television. His curiosity about the world propelled his award-winning career in broadcasting, but it was his generosity of spirit that drew the world to him. We are so proud of the 25 years he spent with CNN, where his newsmaker interviews truly put the network on the international stage. From our CNN family to Larry's, we send our thoughts and prayers, and a promise to carry on his curiosity for the world in our work. In 1985, "Larry King Live" premiered on CNN, beginning a long and storied run that included a number of high-profile interviews. Throughout its more than two (2) decades on air, the show was routinely CNN's most-watched program, and King was arguably the network's biggest star. King left CNN in 2011, a move he expected would amount to retirement. But he kept working until his death, hosting "Larry King Now," a program that aired on Ora TV, Hulu and RT America. King, it seemed, just never wanted the interview to end. "I just love what I do," he said, "I love asking questions, I love doing the interviews." King is survived by three (3) sons. R.I.P. Contrary to what we have been previously told, even by the Ministry of Health in T&T, British Officials warned on Friday (22nd January 2021) that the COVID-19 variant first identified in the U.K might be deadlier than previously thought. This is in addition to the variant being more transmissible than previous versions of the virus.
T&T recorded its first case of the U.K variant on Thursday (21st January 2021) according to the Ministry of Health. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a televised address on Friday that the variant, which has caused COVID-19 infections across the U.K to spike and is spreading rapidly in the U.S, could result in higher death rates. During the televised address, Mr. Johnson said, “We have been informed today that, in addition to spreading more quickly, it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant - the variant that was first identified in London and the South East - may be associated with a higher degree of mortality.”
The COVID-19 death toll in the U.K is expected to pass 100,000 in the coming week. Meanwhile, U.S federal health authorities have said it is likely to become the dominant variant in the U.S by March 2021.
The U.K Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Patrick Vallance, cautioned that the data about the death rates associated with the variant were still highly uncertain. Mr. Vallance noted that in hospitalized COVID-19 cases, there appeared to be no increase in mortality. However, among the population at large, deaths were higher among those who had the new variant. Out of 1,000 persons at age 60 with the new variant, 13 to 14 would be expected to die, compared with around 10 deaths per 1,000 with the old variant, according to Mr. Vallance. This means the new variant may be between 30% - 40% deadlier than previous variants. Mr. Vallance said so far vaccines appear to neutralize the new variant, which Government scientists estimate spreads 30% to 70% faster than previous versions. The U.K is further ahead with its vaccine rollout than elsewhere in Europe. Almost 5.4 Million people had received at least one (1) shot of a vaccine in the U.K as of Thursday.
Until now, British scientists had said there was no evidence that the variant discovered at the end of 2020 caused more severe disease or death, only that it spread more quickly than the previous version.
Officials on Friday said it didn’t appear that the new variant would evade the impact of vaccines, even if it does increase mortality.

The Ministry of Health held a virtual Press Conference at 11am this morning (Friday 22nd January 2021) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today, courtesy of TTT Live Online: - Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, addressed T&T’s first reported case of the COVID-19 variant originating from the UK. Dr. Parasram indicated that the person was repatriated on a flight from the UK with forty-eight (48) other individuals, all of whom were quarantined upon arrival for the requisite period of time. He added that those who were allowed to go home, tested negative before their departure from the quarantine facility. Dr. Parasam confirmed that the case was handled carefully and sufficiently contained. - Technical Director of the Epidemiology Division, Dr. Avery Hinds, gave an in-depth explanation about virus variants. He indicated that variants are mutations of a virus and are a natural result of its evolution as it is spread. - Dr. Hinds also specified that the UK variant of COVID-19 is 50 - 70% more transmissible but is neither more severe nor harder to detect than the original virus. Dr. Hinds concluded by stating that from the evidence gathered so far, the COVID-19 vaccine is just as effective on the UK variant. - Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, stated that his Ministry is not recommending any further restrictions or changes to policies already in place in response to the arrival of the UK variant of COVID-19.
