UPDATE (2pm): As runoff from today's rainfall continue to infiltrate the Caroni River basin and other smaller water courses, the Met Office says river levels have been on a steady rise. Some smaller water courses have already overtopped their banks and over spilled onto surrounding areas.
The South Oropouche River is dangerously high and continues to slowly rise. The Caroni River is currently at 80% capacity and as run-off continues, a very slow but steady rise is anticipated over the next few hours. Although no impactful rainfall is forecast for the remainder of the day, there remains a moderate risk to public safety, livelihood and property, as watercourses maintain high levels.
The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued a Riverine Flood Alert (Yellow Level) from 8:25am this morning (Thursday 29th July 2021) until 12am on Friday (30th July 2021). Smaller water courses are mostly expected to be affected.
The Met Office notes that while major rivers are contained at this time, smaller water courses/rivers are currently at elevated levels. These levels are expected to gradually rise further as the day progresses. Intermittent rainfall activity of varying intensities is forecast to continue today with some improvement by this evening. Localized flooding and ponding can be exacerbated in heavy or prolonged downpours.
Citizens are advised to carefully monitor weather conditions and river/water levels. Monitor updates from official sources, plan safety measures and do not take unnecessary risks. Avoid driving or wading through flood waters. Follow the instructions of Government Officials.
