The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has received reports of hail falling in Arouca on Monday afternoon (27th September 2021) following severe Thunderstorms in the area. Hail was also reported in Tacarigua and El Dorado.
According to the Met Office, hail is the precipitation of particles of ice (hailstones). These can be either transparent, or partly or completely opaque. They are usually spheroidal, conical or irregular in form, and generally 5mm − 50mm in diameter. The particles may fall from a cloud either separately or agglomerated in irregular lumps.
Back in 2019, the Met Office stated that it is a common misconception that hail "cannot" occur in the Caribbean due to the temperatures, but hail/ice is a common feature of Thunderstorms.
“Generally above 16,000 feet, temperatures are below zero degrees Celsius and can get well below zero as you go higher. Thunderclouds can grow to heights above 40,000 feet and thus contain ice of varying size. With that being said, any form of ice would melt before actually reaching the surface, which is one of the reasons why it is rare in T&T.” The Met Office further explained in 2019, “However during very intense Thunderstorms, upward motion within the thundercloud (called updrafts) can keep ice for longer periods within the cloud and allow it to grow larger. Also, downward motion within the cloud (called downdrafts) helps with movement of ice out of the cloud. These features would allow hail to survive the trip to the surface, with a significant reduction in size of course.”
