The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is appealing to drivers to exercise greater care and caution on the Nation’s roads as two (2) persons perished in road traffic accidents this weekend.
Around 12:30am on Saturday morning (9th April 2022), Officers attached to the Central Highway Patrol Unit responded to a report from the E999 Command Centre of a serious road traffic accident along the Northbound lane of the Uriah Butler Highway in the vicinity of Caroni. The Officers arrived on scene and observed a grey Ford Ranger crashed into a T&TEC lamp pole on the Western side of the roadway. The collision resulted in fatal injuries to the front seat passenger, a 44-year-old woman of Edinburgh 500, Chaguanas. The driver of the vehicle, and rear passenger, suffered serious injuries and were conveyed to Mt. Hope Hospital by staff of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Chaguanas Police are continuing investigations. Also at around 2:15am on Saturday morning, a 27-year-old driver of Jacob Hill, Wallerfield, was proceeding North along the Valencia Stretch when he lost control of his Nissan Wingroad wagon while attempting to negotiate the roundabout. The vehicle flipped several times, ejecting the driver who suffered fatal head injuries. His front seat passenger, a 20-year-old woman, was taken to the Sangre Grande Hospital for treatment. The TTPS is extending its sincerest condolences to the victims’ families and urges motorists to exercise greater care and caution when driving. Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch’s Senior Superintendent, Wayne Mystar, is warning drivers that his Officers will be out in full force during the Easter holiday period with special emphasis on the offence of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol and speed enforcement. According to him, “Drivers will face a ‘zero tolerance’ approach this week into the holiday weekend. We have seen an increase in highway fatalities in 2022 and we want everyone to enjoy their holiday but it cannot be at the expense of their or other person’s safety. Let’s do the right thing and obey road traffic laws.” TTPS Road Safety Project Co-ordinator, Sergeant Brent Batson, referenced the graphic video clip circulating on social media by stating, “whereas I don’t condone such videos, the immeasurable trauma which the female experienced at the scene of the collision is exactly what we work so hard to prevent. We continue to appeal to drivers to do their part to help save lives and keep families together.” According to data from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch Roadway Surveillance Unit, road traffic deaths have increased by 25% in 2022 with thirty (30) persons having lost their lives on the roads, compared to twenty (24) for same period last year.
