According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), at approximately 1:13 PM on Sunday (14th April, 2024), the Barrackpore East Secondary School received an alarming email via its official address, notifying the Principal of an intended threat, targeting students entering the school compound on Monday (15th April, 2024) and Tuesday (16th April, 2024). The threat specifically mentioned the intention to shoot students.
In a Media Release this morning (Wednesday 17th April, 2024), the TTPS said the school “immediately contacted the Barrackpore Police Station and a report was made. The Officers of the Southern Division promptly forwarded a copy of the threatening email to our Cybercrime Unit for further investigation.”
Police contacted the MTS office, who indicated that they were aware of the situation and had already increased security measures at the school. The Barrackpore Police, together with the Southern Division Task Force, provided heightened security on Monday (15th April, 2024) and Tuesday (16th April, 2024) and will “maintain a vigilant presence to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff. Additional patrols have been deployed in the vicinity of the school, and these efforts will continue as necessary.”
Senior Superintendent of the Southern Division, Brian Soodeen, assured the Principal and staff that activities at the school will continue in a safe environment. Meanwhile, Officers of the Cyber and Social Media Unit are continuing investigations into the origin of the email, and the TTPS notes that “every effort is being made to identify and apprehend those responsible.” The TTPS said it “condemns these reprehensible acts in the strongest possible terms, as threats against educational institutions, especially those aimed at innocent students, are abhorrent and will not be tolerated.” The Media Release concluded by saying, “We urge anyone with information about this incident or any suspicious activity to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities in their efforts to ensure justice is served.” We are a small operation.
