The Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago stand with the Government and people of Guyana in the aftermath of the devastating fire earlier today (Monday 22nd May 2023) that claimed the lives of young students of the Mahdia Secondary School in Mahdia, Guyana. This according to a Media Release today from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) - Communications, which notes that Prime Minister Keith Rowley has been in “direct communication with the President of Guyana, His Excellency Dr. Irfan Ali.” The Media Release said Prime Minister Rowley expressed “condolences on the terrible loss of lives and has offered assistance when and if required.” Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Senator the Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, has remained in regular communication throughout the day with Guyana's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Hugh Todd. Formal letters of condolence are also being conveyed today from Port-of-Spain to Georgetown. At least nineteen (19) children were killed and several others injured in a fire at the Mahdia Secondary School dormitory in the Southwestern border town of Mahdia, Guyana. The fire was said to have started shortly before Midnight. Fourteen (14) bodies were extracted from the dormitory and five (5) died at Hospital.
A 5-year-old boy, identified only as Adoni, was among those who died. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. Investigations are continuing into the tragic incident.
