UPDATE: The Met Office has issued an Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) from 5:00 AM on Wednesday morning (21st September 2022). The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) said this morning (Tuesday 20th September 2022) that it continues to monitor the progress of an active Tropical Wave to the East of the Southern Windward Islands. The system currently has a medium potential (40%) of development in forty-eight (48) hours and a high potential (70%) for cyclone development in the next five (5) days.
At 8:00 AM this morning, the axis of the Tropical Wave was near 54W, with the leading edge about 450 Km East of the Southern Windward Islands. The Wave is accompanied by heavy showers and thunderstorms moving Westward at 28 Km/h. There is the possibility of gradual development over the next few days. On this present course, the Met Office notes that this system is expected to move across the Windward Islands during Wednesday/Thursday of this week. Regardless of cyclone development, this system is expected to bring unstable conditions, resulting in moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm activity, affecting Trinidad and Tobago and the Windward Islands. At this present time, there are no alerts, watches or warnings in effect. The TTMS said it continues to monitor this Tropical Wave and will issue and update at 6:00 PM this evening or earlier if the situation warrants. Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami said that satellite data indicates that the Tropical Wave has become better organized this morning. Additional development is expected, and a Tropical Depression is likely to form within the next few days as the system moves Westward to West-Northwestward at 15 to 20 Mph across the Eastern and Central Caribbean Sea. “Interests in the Windward Islands should closely monitor the progress of this system as heavy rainfall and gusty winds could affect these islands beginning on Wednesday,” the NHC said.
