Prime Minister Keith Rowley hosted a virtual Press Conference at 2:30pm this afternoon (Thursday 29th April 2021) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today, courtesy of TTT Live Online: - Prime Minister Keith Rowley stated that in the last 24 hours, 328 positive COVID-19 cases were reported. - As a result of these escalating numbers, the Prime Minister announced many new COVID-19 restrictions that will go into effect from Midnight tonight until 23rd May 2021. - The following services and establishments will be closed:
- The Public Service will operate on “essential service” only. - Inter-island travel between Trinidad and Tobago will be limited to three (3) trips per day for planes and 25% capacity for boats. - Prime Minister Rowley shared troubling news on the availability of vaccines to T&T. He stated that possible contamination of AstraZeneca vaccines at a production company in the U.S could further dampen our efforts against the Pandemic. The Prime Minister went on to indicate that T&T's next batch of COVID-19 vaccines from COVAX is coming from Italy and it is uncertain if the Italian embargo on vaccines will affect our shipment. - The Prime Minister announced that Government has taken a decision to use the 38,000 vaccine doses being reserved for second shots, to administer first doses to persons. P.M Rowley indicated that receiving one dose is still beneficial in protecting against COVID-19 if T&T fails to receive the second tranche of vaccines. However, the Prime Minister stated that if everything goes as scheduled, everyone will be able to receive their two (2) doses. - Prime Minister Rowley said that street vendors can continue to operate for the time being, children will still be allowed to go to school in preparation for major exams and as long as you are masked and don't congregate, outdoor exercise is still allowed. - Prime Minister Rowley appealed to the population to NOT travel to Tobago unless it is essential or an emergency. - The Prime Minister also indicated that ongoing monitoring shows that the behaviour in homes (parties and limes) are a major contributor to the numbers being seen and urged the population to refrain from such activities.
