UPDATE: These steps work on both the iOS and Android Apps for Facebook Messenger! Enjoy.
Facebook seems to be testing a Dark Mode for Facebook Messenger on iOS in advance of the release of iOS 13 later this year for iPhone/iPad. This feature may also be coming to the Android App at some point. As spotted by a user on Reddit, there’s a hidden way to enable Dark Mode in the Facebook Messenger App for iOS.
Follow the steps below to enable Dark Mode: 1) Send someone (or yourself) the Crescent Moon emoji in a chat. 2) After you sent the Crescent Moon emoji, a bunch of Moons should fall from the top of the screen followed by a pop-up message. If nothing happens, press and hold the Crescent Moon emoji in the message until you get the pop-up message. 3) Click on the “Try It in Settings” button in the pop-up message and then enable Dark Mode.
That’s all there is to it. Of course you can always disable Dark Mode in your App Settings afterwards.
According to Facebook’s Blog: Messenger’s Dark Mode provides lower brightness while maintaining contrast and vibrancy. Dark Mode cuts down the glare from your phone for use in low light situations, so you can use the Messenger features you love no matter when or where you are.

Bloomberg reported earlier this year that iOS 13 will add long-awaited support for a system-wide Dark Mode.
