The Ministry of Health held a virtual Press Conference at 11am this morning (Wednesday 26th August 2020) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today: - Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, stated that the Ministry of Health will institute the next phase of their "escalated response," which means that certain categories of persons will be asked to self-isolate and the existing Public Health Regulations will be strictly enforced. - Minister Deyalsingh also indicated that Parliament will be looking to institute mandatory mask legislation on Friday. - Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, stated that the status of COVID-19 in the future will be determined by the behavior of the population over the next two (2) weeks. He expressed hope that there will be a decrease in daily numbers in the coming days. - When addressing a question regarding Venezuelan teenagers who recently escaped a quarantine facility, Dr. Parasram said that the teens in question were asymptomatic for quite some time and were awaiting discharge. He indicated that there is an extremely low chance for them to infect others with the virus. - CMO Parasram announced that a decision has been made to have persons that test positive for the virus and are presenting asymptomatic, or with mild symptoms, to be quarantined in their homes. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) will be involved in the monitoring of these persons and Health Officials will make checks twice a day. If symptoms worsen, the persons in question will be hospitalized. Watch the Press Conference below in its entirety. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
