The Ministry of Health held a virtual Press Conference at 11am this morning (Monday 28th June 2021) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today, courtesy of TTT Live Online: - Director in the Directorate of Women's Health, Dr. Adesh Sirjusingh, announced that as of today, the Sinopharm vaccine can be used on breastfeeding women. However, the AstraZeneca vaccine is still not being administered to that group. - Technical Director of Epidemiology, Dr. Avery Hinds, in providing his clinical update indicated that presently there are 401 persons hospitalized with COVID-19, putting total Hospital occupancy at 52%. He went on to say that Ward occupancy is currently at 48%, ICU occupancy is at 76% and HDU occupancy at 93%. - Dr. Hinds also indicated that 204,249 persons have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine with 71,426 persons receiving both doses to date. - Dr. Sirjusingh indicated that since the start of the Pandemic, 170 pregnant women have contracted COVID-19 and at least ten (10) of them have ended up in the Intensive Care Unit. - Dr. Sirjusingh stated that pregnant women who are thirty-five (35) years and older, those with co-morbidities and those who are currently in the second half of their term are at higher risk of experiencing severe symptoms from COVID-19. Dr. Sirjusingh went on to say that even though COVID-19 does not directly affect the fetus, the virus increases the chance of pre-term delivery and can cause possible heart complications in pregnant women.
