James Michael Tyler, famous for playing Gunther on the beloved sitcom "Friends,” has died at age fifty-nine (59) after battling stage 4 prostate cancer. Tyler passed away peacefully on Sunday morning (24th October 2021) at his home in Los Angeles.
He starred in 150 episodes of "Friends" over the course of its 10-year run and is truly considered by fans as one of the “Friends.” He played a Barista at the Central Perk cafe on the long-running sitcom.
A statement from his family said, "The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh "Friend"), from the hit series "Friends," but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband.” Their statement went on to say, "Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers, and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures. If you met him once you made a friend for life."
Fans were stunned earlier this year when Tyler first revealed his prostate cancer diagnosis, as he had just appeared in the “Friends Reunion Special” on HBO Max, but made no mention of it at that time. He later explained his reason for not mentioning it during the Reunion Special, saying he didn't want to be a downer. However, Tyler battled privately with cancer for three (3) years - he was first diagnosed in 2018.
He acted in several big shows over the course of his career, including "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," "Scrubs," "Modern Music," "Just Shoot Me!" and others.
Tyler is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno.
May he R.I.P.
