The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries announced on Monday 17th December 2018 that ‘Regular Gas’ (RON 83) will no longer be supplied on the local market. Following the closure of Petrotrin, the last available stocks of RON 83 have already been distributed since 7th December 2018.
As a result, Fishermen are planning to stage a protest in front the Prime Minister’s Office next week as they will now be forced to pay much more in order to power their boat engines. Some Fishermen may see an increase in fuel costs by as much as 150% per fishing trip. Higher fish prices can be expected soon as in addition to increased costs for Fishermen, there will also be fewer of them as many will no longer be able to afford more expensive gas. See a statement below from the Vice President of the Claxton Bay Fishing Association, Bhadase Sooknanan. How are we to live? Why are they trying to break the backs of the Fishermen?
