The death toll from the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States topped 2,000 on Saturday evening (28th March 2020) as President Trump earlier in the day said that parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut could be put under a two (2) week quarantine. However, by Saturday night he announced the quarantine would not be necessary and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) would instead issue a strong Travel Advisory.
The CDC announced the new Travel Advisory Saturday night, urging people in those States to "refrain from non-essential domestic travel." The Advisory does not apply to employees of critical infrastructure industries, including but not limited to trucking, public health professionals, financial services and food supply.
According to CNN, at least 121,285 people in the U.S have contracted COVID-19 since the first case was reported in late January. The death toll has reached 2,043, doubling in the last two days. The U.S surpassed Italy and China this week to become the country with the most cases in the world. In the past days, Federal and State authorities have been scrambling to slow down the spread of the deadly virus.
More than half of the cases in the U.S are from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. At least 215 Million Americans are under various stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders as of Saturday evening. Meanwhile in Illinois, an infant under the age of one who had tested positive for COVID-19 is believed to be the youngest person to have died with the virus in the United States.
