UPDATE 3: The woman who was shot during the mob assault on the U.S Capitol has died, according to D.C Police. The woman’s name was not released. Video posted on social media showed a crowd inside the Capitol when a gunshot is heard and then the woman, wearing a Trump banner around her neck, is lowered to the ground. She could later be seen being loaded into an ambulance with blood around her upper body.
UPDATE 2: D.C Mayor Muriel E. Bowser imposed a citywide curfew as a chaotic scene worsened at the U.S Capitol building. From 6pm on Wednesday to 6am on Thursday, Bowser said no one other than essential personnel would be allowed outdoors in the city.
UPDATE: A woman has been reportedly shot inside the U.S Capitol after a crowd of rioters breached the building's entry on Wednesday. The woman was in critical condition after being shot in the chest, according to CNN.
Pro-Trump protesters broke through several layers of fencing at the U.S Capitol Building in Washington, D.C this afternoon (Wednesday 6th January 2021) where Congress was voting to certify the 2020 Election results. The protestors came to blows with Capitol Police at the entrance.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of demonstrators stormed the Capitol, reportedly tearing through at least four (4) fence lines that were installed to block off access to where Senators and members of Congress were set to cast their votes on Joe Biden's victory.
The chaos started hours after an angry Trump told a crowd of supporters at a rally that he would "never concede." He was pushing for the Senate to not certify the Election for President-Elect Joe Biden. The protestors (some of who were seen wearing body armor) then moved from outside the Capitol building, up its steps, eventually breaching the doors and turning violent inside. The electoral vote was immediately called to a halt as the mob entered the building.
The ongoing situation forced the evacuation of lawmakers as well as Vice President Mike Pence. After repeated calls from leaders on both sides of the aisle to call off his supporters, President Donald Trump released a video message on Twitter at 4:17pm EST, telling his supporters to go home. In the same video, he continued to push unfounded claims about the Election. "I know you're in pain, I know you're hurt. We had an Election that was stolen from us," he said, repeating the claim in the 1-minute pre-recorded video. "But you have to go home now." Twitter labeled the video with a warning, "This claim of election fraud is disputed, and this Tweet can’t be replied to, Retweeted, or liked due to a risk of violence." — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 6, 2021
The entire D.C National Guard has been activated to help, and several other law enforcement groups, including the Federal Protective Service, Secret Service, Virginia National Guard, and Arlington, Virginia, Police Department, are responding to assist the U.S Capitol Police.
