UPDATE: The CMO clarified that the affected person took the AstraZeneca vaccine and Thrombocytopenia is a known, albeit, rare, side effect of that vaccine.
At today’s Press Conference (Saturday 29th May 2021), hosted by Prime Minister Keith Rowley, Chief Medial Officer Dr. Roshan Parasram confirmed one (1) case of vaccine-induced Thrombocytopenia (low blood platelet count) in a post-vaccinated person.
Dr. Parasram noted the person is doing very well and is under the care of Dr. Kenneth Charles, a Hematologist. This case will be reported to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) is a blood disorder that results in blood clots forming in small blood vessels throughout the body. This results in a low platelet count, low red blood cells due to their breakdown, and often kidney, heart, and brain dysfunction.
