The #BlackoutTuesday hashtag has dominated social media on Tuesday (2nd June 2020) along with all-black photos, as musicians, actors, major museums, social media companies and ordinary users all took part in the movement. But what is the movement? Why are people doing this?
The protest movement was sparked by the brutal death of a black American, George Floyd, by a white Police Officer in Minneapolis last week. The Officer had his knee on Floyd's neck against the ground for at least eight (8) minutes before he died at the scene. Floyd was killed during his arrest for allegedly using a fake $20 note.

Since Floyd's killing, protests have taken place around the world and the United States continues to be gripped by unrest in the wake of the 46-year-old's death. The #BlackoutTuesday initiative calls for business to be suspended for a day. Organisers say they want a "a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community" through "an urgent step of action to provoke accountability and change". Posting a black square on her Instagram page, Rihanna said her brand, Fenty, would not be "selling sh*t" on Tuesday. Ariana Grande, one of the most popular Instagram users with 189 Million followers, posted a black square with links to Black Lives Matter accounts, with the caption: “Sending strength and if you are protesting today please be safe.” Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who has 185 Million followers, simply posted a black square with the hashtags #NormalizeEquality and #BlackoutTuesday. Other celebrities including Britney Spears, Drake, Jamie Fox and Quincy Jones have also joined the #BlackoutTuesday movement. Radio stations and other companies pledged social media blackouts for the day.
Police have clashed, at times violently, with protesters in U.S cities including New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis, while Donald Trump has threatened to deploy the country's military unless state authorities find a way to stop ongoing demonstrations.
