Barbados has confirmed its first case of the Monkeypox virus this morning (Saturday 16th July 2022). The confirmed case is a Barbadian male in his thirties with a travel history, according to Minister of Health, lan Gooding-Edghill.
The man presented to the Winston Scott Polyclinic with symptoms of a progressive rash, body pains and fever. He sought medical attention at the Polyclinic within hours of arrival in Barbados. He was then swabbed and samples sent to the Best-dos Santos Public Health Lab Results were returned in twenty-four (24) hours and showed a positive case. The patient is currently in isolation, under direct care and medical supervision of the Ministry of Health. Contact Tracing is underway.
Jamaica recently recorded its first case of the virus on 6th July 2022. That patient was a male who recently travelled from the United Kingdom. The man reportedly presented to the public health system on 5th July 2022, but was on the island since 1st July 2022. He was isolated, with his close contacts also placed in quarantine.
A crew member on a flight headed to St. Lucia also tested positive for the virus, but Officials said that person never disembarked.
