The Ministry of Health held a virtual Press Conference at 2pm this afternoon (Saturday 26th September 2020), along with Prime Minister Keith Rowley, to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today: - Prime Minister Keith Rowley announced that there will be no new legislative changes to manage COVID-19 in T&T. The Public Health Regulations already in place will remain until 11th October 2020. - The Prime Minister said Health Officials are looking to get COVID-19 numbers down to twenty (20) infections a day so T&T can get back to some semblance of participation with other islands and actively engage in the CARICOM travel bubble (to also repatriate Nationals in Grenada and other islands). He said he expects to make “one or two decisions” when he next meets with the national community on COVID-19. - There is a downward trend in COVID-19 infections in T&T. Dr. Michelle Trotman, Thoracic Medical Director at Caura Hospital, said if there is a 100% compliance from the public in terms of sanitising, physical distancing and mask wearing, the COVID-19 numbers will go down, and stay down. Dr. Trotman said wearing a face mask is now part of who we are, and people are asked to encourage others to wear their masks. - Dr. Trotman said the flu season will soon be upon us and wearing a face mask will not only protect citizens, but also help medical health professionals as well. She encouraged citizens to get the flu vaccine. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, also urged persons with flu symptoms to stay home and contact the nearest facility for testing if their condition worsens and they have symptoms more in line with COVID-19. The difference between COVID-19 and influenza is that there is a flu vaccine. - Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said the flu vaccine is an annual shot. Flu season runs from October to May each year. Watch the Press Conference below in its entirety. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.

Pictured Above: Ominous clouds appear around 12pm on Saturday, facing South from Chaguanas. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) at 12pm on Saturday (26th September 2020), T&T is generally hot and sunny despite a few showers developing in some areas. The temperature at Piarco was 33.5°C at this time and is expected to reach as high as 35°C, while a maximum temperature of 33°C is forecast for Crown Point, Tobago. The TTMS notes an increase in cloudiness and showery activity is expected this afternoon. This is as a result of light low-level winds coupled with convergence ahead of a weak Tropical Wave and daytime heating. As such, the TTMS forecasts partly cloudy conditions with light to moderate showers in a few areas this afternoon. There is also a medium chance of a heavy shower or Thunderstorm favouring Western areas of Trinidad. Mostly clear and warm conditions are expected tonight. Gusty winds and Street/Flash Flooding are possible in areas of heavy showers or Thunderstorms. The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is currently just South of Trinidad and Tobago. At this time data analysis indicate that the ITCZ would not propagate Northward and affect T&T over the next few days. The TTMS will continue to monitor the weather conditions across Trinidad and Tobago and will continue to advise the public in a timely manner. What’s the weather like in your area? Let us know in the comments below. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.

Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith, announced the launch of a widespread investigation at the highest level on Wednesday 23rd September 2020 to determine who decided to return more than $22 Million in cash which was seized from a house at Kathleen Warner Drive, Phase I, La Horquetta, on Tuesday. The money was seized by Officers of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) who executed a search warrant at a house where it was alleged that persons were operating a Pyramid Scheme, under the alleged name “Drugs Sou-Sou” (DSS). The money was later kept at a Police Station. Commissioner Griffith said preliminary investigations showed that the money was handed back to the operator of the Scheme on Wednesday without his knowledge and those of his Deputy Commissioners. A Media Release issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) on Wednesday noted that Commissioner Griffith found it “very suspicious that $22 Million in cash was seized and within hours, that money was checked and a decision made to give it back without the input of the Financial Intelligence Bureau (FIB) of the TTPS.” Investigators completed the count of the money at 12:30am early Wednesday morning. The Commissioner said the investigation would determine if any criminal or disciplinary action is to be taken against any Police Officers. Commissioner Griffith also said the money was handed back without a proper investigation to determine whether any of it was counterfeit. He said no proper investigation was done as to the source of these funds, or whether the person or persons involved had committed any criminal acts. As part of this investigation, he further said that external forensic personnel will be brought in to determine if any of the money was counterfeit. The Media Release also noted that the Commissioner is aware that there is a concern that a number of persons invested their hard-earned money, hoping to cash in on this alleged Pyramid Scheme. He gave the assurance that once these persons can prove that their money was legitimate, the TTPS will ensure that their money is returned to them in the shortest possible time. Diligent inquiries are being pursued at this time. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
