Mark Saltzman, a former Writer for Sesame Street from 1984 through 1999, is revealing for the first time that the characters of Ernie, Bert and Snuffy were Gay - at least for the two (2) decades he was writing for the Children's Program - but Sesame Street as well as ‘Bert’ Puppeteer, Frank Oz, have shot down his claims.
In an interview with Queerty, Mark Saltzman (Above, Right) was asked the question that many have wondered for years. Mr. Saltzman revealed here that Ernie and Bert were an analog for his own relationship with his late partner, Arnold Glassman.
He also said in the interview that Mr. Snuffleupagus (aka ‘Snuffy’) was written like a 'closeted' Homosexual, and expressed his remorse about never being able to write the iconic show's first Gay storyline.
Ernie and Bert were initially the creation of Jim Henson (Above, Center) and Frank Oz (Above, Right), with the Puppets said to have been analogs for the relationship between those two (2) men, who were both Heterosexual. There has long been speculation about the sexuality of Ernie and Bert, who were introduced in 1969 and share a bedroom (though they sleep in separate beds) at their ‘123 Sesame Place’ home.
See quotes below from Mark Saltzman, Frank Oz and Seasame Street. Let us know your thoughts in the comments - did you always consider Ernie, Bert and Snuffy as being Gay?
Mark Saltzman during the interview:
I remember one time that a column from San Francisco Chronicle, a Pre-schooler in the City turned to Mom and asked "are Bert & Ernie lovers?" And that, coming from a Pre-schooler was fun. And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it.
Statement from Frank Oz:
It seems Mr. Mark Saltzman was asked if Bert & Ernie are Gay. It's fine that he feels they are. They're not, of course. But why that question? Does it really matter? Why the need to define people as only Gay? There's much more to a human being than just straightness or gayness.
Statement from Seasame Workshop:
Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach Pre-schoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.
