The Ministry of Health held a virtual Press Conference at 11am this morning (Monday 24th August 2020) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. There are now fifteen (15) COVID-19 related deaths recorded in Trinidad and Tobago. - Minister Deyalsingh said he took a drive along the Brian Lara Promenade this morning and was alarmed to see how many people were sitting close to each other and not wearing face masks. He noted that customers at nearby banks were wearing masks, in keeping with the ‘No Mask, No Service’ policy at business places. - Minister Deyalsingh reminded the public that the uptick in COVID-19 came after the lifting of restrictions. He said in order for us to beat the curve without a harsh lockdown, the public must abide by the public health measures:

The following is a breakdown of persons at quarantine facilities:
- Dr. Nandram said 40 persons will be moved from Hospitals to step-down facilities, and 110 persons at the quarantine/step-down facilities are expected to be discharged to their homes. - There are 42 suspected COVID-19 cases at two (2) facilities (37 at Arima and 5 at Augustus Long Hospital). - On comparisons between wearing a face mask and face shield, Dr. Nandram said a face mask provides greater protection. He explained that there is a higher probability for a person to contract COVID-19 while wearing a face shield because virus particles can still move around inside the shield. - Epidemiologist, Dr. Avery Hinds, noted that a week has passed since the implementation of updated restrictions (limited public gatherings, closure of gyms etc). He said the present increase in cases is expected and will hold fast for a little before gradually decreasing. Dr. Hinds said the public must do their part to prevent transmission of COVID-19 by wearing face masks, washing their hands regularly, maintaining social distancing, and staying home when they are ill. UPDATE: Bolt is denying reports that he tested positive for COVID-19. He said that he is currently awaiting the result from the test, which he took in order to travel for work.
Usain Bolt has tested positive for COVID-19 several days after partying with England star Raheem Sterling for his 34th birthday in Jamaica. Nationwide90fm, a radio station in Jamaica, reports that the greatest sprinter of all time has contracted the disease and will spend time in self-isolation as a result. The 34-year-old took a test for the virus a few days ago and discovered on Sunday that he had tested positive for the disease.
Bolt attended a surprise birthday party on 21st August 2020 which was attended by a host of big names. Manchester City star Sterling, Bayer Leverkusen attacker Leon Bailey and cricket legend Chris Gayle are believed to have been in attendance. Footage from the party showed Bolt laughing and dancing with his guests and even taking the microphone while speakers blared out an Adele song at the outdoor bash. The eight-time Olympic gold medallist hailed it as the “best birthday ever” on Social Media featuring a photo of Bolt and his baby daughter Olympia.
It is not clear whether Bolt is suffering any symptoms of the disease but local media said he would “proceed into isolation.” Bolt would be one of the most prominent sportsmen in the world to contract the virus, after tennis star Novak Djokovic tested positive in June and American major sports leagues were disrupted by bouts of the disease.
Jamaica has recorded a total of 1,413 cases of COVID-19 and sixteen (16) deaths from the disease. On Saturday, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness warned of a recent surge in cases and urged Jamaicans to “exercise greater vigilance” to prevent the spread.

The Ministry of Health held a virtual Press Conference at 11am this morning (Saturday 22nd August 2020) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today: - Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said Health Officials are working assiduously to move T&T from "Community Spread" back to "Cluster Spread" - which is mostly confined to a smaller circle. He said testing must be ramped up in order to accomplish this. - The Health Minister also apologised to persons at step-down/quarantine facilities who are awaiting COVID-19 test results. He expects the problem to be rectified in a day or two (2). - Two (2) key decisions have been taken: Schools will re-open in January 2021, and the Brooklyn Settlement facility in Sangre Grande has now been reserved to treat senior citizens who may need specialised care for COVID-19. - More beds and facilities to be added: Penal/Debe with 110 beds and UTT with 100 - 150 beds. Minister Deyalsingh said there is physical capacity (beds, facilities) to deal with COVID-19 in the health system. However, the human resource capacity (healthcare workers) is another matter. It can get overwhelming for them and many have reported being burnt out. - Minister Deyalsingh admitted that Health Officials have not been getting the public’s co-operation in some instances. He cited a report which stated that Police had to break up an event at a private residence where thirty-two (32) people had gathered. He urged citizens not to congregate or stage gatherings. The Health Minister also received reports of bars closing their doors and encouraging patrons to stay inside their establishments to watch CPL games in an enclosed environment. He said, "That type of behaviour is what is going to give us problems. Stay home. Only go out for necessary purchases." - As of Monday 17th August 2020, there were 19,000 COVID-19 Test Kits in the country. 20,000 more Test Kits are coming in from Canada and 100,000 from another source. Twenty-five (25) more GeneXpert machines have been ordered for the major health facilities. - Principal Medical Officer - Epidemiology, Dr. Naresh Nandram, provided an update on COVID-19 testing and reporting. He reminded that hundreds of persons can get infected from a singular COVID-19 case. He urged persons who are ill to stay home and follow the Public Health Guidelines on COVID-19 as this will cut down on the number of persons being sought (through Contact Tracing) for testing. - Dr. Nandram confirmed that as of this morning, approximately 600 samples remain to be tested for COVID-19. To clear this backlog, the Ministry is utilising a private lab. The samples went to the private lab yesterday and results are expected within the next day. - There are also plans to expand and digitise the system so COVID-19 tests will be requested digitally. Dr. Nandram said with the end of paper-based forms, the lag time will be "brought effectively to nil. This will be close to real-time reporting as can possibly be had." - Approval has been granted/funding identified to procure a PCR machine to establish a molecular testing service at the Trinidad Public Health Laboratory (TPHL). It is expected that the lab will be running on a 24-hour basis. Additional staff will be brought on. - The Medical Research Foundation (MRF) is awaiting the green light from the Caribbean Public Health Authority (CARPHA) to start testing for COVID-19. - Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, confirmed an adjustment in the discharge criteria from a secondary/tertiary facility to a step-down facility, and from a step-down facility to home. - Dr. Parasram said temperature checks on the forehead or wrist can work to tell if you have a fever. However, it is not a singular check to see if you have COVID-19. Businesses should ask/look for other signs and symptoms of the virus. - Dr. Parasram stated that ninety-two (92) persons at Paria Hotel are expected to be discharged today or tomorrow.
