An employee of Scotiabank in Princes Town has tested positive for COVID-19, forcing the branch to remain closed until further notice. The employee has been in quarantine since exhibiting symptoms and is now under the medical supervision of the Ministry of Health. Trinidad and Tobago has seen a recent surge in COVID-19 cases with the Ministry reporting a total of 1,384 confirmed cases as of this morning (Wednesday 26th August 2020). 1,177 of those are active cases and a staggering 454 have been reported since Sunday morning. According to a Press Release issued by Scotiabank this afternoon, employees at the branch are in the process of being tested and are self-isolating for the stipulated fourteen (14) days. The Ministry of Health held a virtual Press Conference at 11am this morning (Wednesday 26th August 2020) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today: - Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, stated that the Ministry of Health will institute the next phase of their "escalated response," which means that certain categories of persons will be asked to self-isolate and the existing Public Health Regulations will be strictly enforced. - Minister Deyalsingh also indicated that Parliament will be looking to institute mandatory mask legislation on Friday. - Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, stated that the status of COVID-19 in the future will be determined by the behavior of the population over the next two (2) weeks. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) are now on the hunt for three (3) Venezuelan teens who escaped the quarantine facility at Canada Hall in UWI, St Augustine. The three (3) teens, aged 14, 15 and 17, were somehow able to bypass security guards at the quarantine facility sometime between Monday night (24th August 2020) and Tuesday morning. The three (3) minors (pictured above) failed to report for breakfast between 8am and 12pm on Tuesday and upon checking, it was revealed they were in fact missing. A nurse at the quarantine facility reported the matter to the St. Joseph Police Station. The Ministry of Health revealed in its 10am update this morning (Wednesday 26th August 2020) that there are 132 additional cases of COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. The Ministry reported a record-breaking total of 153 cases just yesterday. There have been seven (7) recent deaths, bringing the total deaths to fifteen (15). T&T’s confirmed cases now jumps to 1,384, with 1,177 being active cases. The Ministry has reported a stunning 454 positive cases since Sunday morning (23rd August 2020). The Ministry stated the 132 new cases are from samples taken during the period 18th August to 25th August 2020. Therefore, this figure is NOT representative of the positive cases over the last 24 hours only. The Ministry said out of these 132 new cases, one (1) tested positive at a private lab. All established protocols have been implemented. Fourteen (14) persons have been discharged from various step-down/transition facilities. The Ministry also notes that there are currently 171 COVID-19 positive patients being treated at Hospitals - 108 at Couva and 63 at Caura. Among the 108 at Couva, five (5) are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and nine (9) are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU). There are also currently 374 COVID-19 positive patients in step-down/transition facilities. 432 additional patients are en route/being admitted to Hospital and 200 new patients will be processed for admission. Low Cost Supermarket (Cunupia) Limited confirmed this evening (Monday 24th August 2020) that a male employee has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently under the supervision of the Ministry of Health. Potentially exposed employees have been identified and are following the Ministry’s direction of preventative quarantine and testing. Low Cost indicated that the employee was not on their compound for the past two (2) weeks as he has been in quarantine since then. A 10-month-old baby girl is among this country’s 1,031 confirmed COVID-19 cases according to reports. The baby’s mother first tested positive for the virus after showing symptoms and the 10-month-old was then swabbed earlier this month. The baby began experiencing fever and nasal congestion prior to testing. Both mother and child were taken to the Couva Hospital by ambulance. Since then, the baby’s father, her 7-year-old sister and three (3) other family members have all tested positive for COVID-19 and were also taken to the Couva Hospital. Since then, five (5) members of the family, including the baby, have been taken to a step-down facility awaiting further testing. A relative said the family was swabbed a second time on Monday morning (24th August 2020). “We are now hoping for negative results as everyone is feeling better now.
