UPDATE: The White House on Thursday expressed outrage over “credible” reports that Russian forces were holding the staff of the Chernobyl nuclear facilities hostage.
“This unlawful and dangerous hostage-taking, which could upend the routine civil service efforts required to maintain and protect the nuclear waste facilities, is obviously incredibly alarming,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a news briefing, requesting the workers’ release.
Russian forces have now seized control of the Chernobyl Power Plant in Northern Ukraine, the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster, according to the Agency that manages the area.
According to reports, Russian troops overran the Plant on Thursday (24th February 2022), the first day of its multi-pronged invasion of Ukraine. The management of the Plant allegedly fled before the troops arrived, so no one was there to give instructions or defend the Plant. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine before dawn on Thursday with a series of missile attacks against locations near the capital Kyiv, as well as long-range artillery against the city of Kharkiv, near the Russian border. The assault quickly spread across Central and Eastern Ukraine as Russian forces attacked the country from three (3) sides. Earlier on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russian forces were attempting to seize control of the Nuclear Plant. He said, “Russian occupation forces are trying to seize the Chernobyl [Nuclear Power Plant]. Our defenders are sacrificing their lives so that the tragedy of 1986 will not be repeated.” He added, “This is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe.”
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry warned of another nuclear disaster in the city, echoing the statement from President Zelensky. The Ministry tweeted, “In 1986, the world saw the biggest technological disaster in Chernobyl. If Russia continues the war, Chernobyl can happen again in 2022.”
On 26th April 1986, a meltdown near Pripyat, Ukraine sent a radioactive cloud over parts of Europe and left a no man’s land of contaminated soil and other fallout, which remains dangerous. More than thirty (30) people died in the immediate aftermath of the explosion that tore through Chernobyl's No. 4 Reactor. In the years that followed, countless others died from radiation symptoms, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The Ukraine Government evacuated around 135,000 people from the area and the 19-mile exclusion zone around the Chernobyl Plant will remain uninhabitable for decades to come. In the months following the accident in 1986, a sarcophagus was built to cover Reactor 4 and contain the radioactive material. However, it has since deteriorated, resulting in radiation leaks.

After months of predictions and warnings, Russian forces began their attack on Ukraine Thursday morning (24th February 2022) local time, with reports of troops crossing the border to the North and South, explosions in multiple cities including the capital Kyiv, and warnings from Russian President Vladimir Putin of future bloodshed unless Ukrainian forces lay down their arms.
United States President Joe Biden is set to address the nation at 12pm ET, where he is expected to unveil new measures that could cut off Russia from advanced technology, announce new restrictions on large financial institutions and slap sanctions on additional members of the inner circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russia has called its offensive on Ukraine a “special military operation,” which came as world leaders attempted to avert catastrophe with a meeting of the United Nations Security Council amid warnings that a possible invasion could start the biggest war in Europe since 1945.
The first blasts were heard at around 5am Thursday, prompting immediate condemnation from the United States and its allies, which have threatened to enact ”full scale” sanctions in response to Russian military aggression. As air raid sirens rang out across the largest city in Ukraine, Kyiv, early Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky moved to enact martial law and Government Ministers accused Moscow of launching a "full scale invasion." As dawn broke, heavy traffic could be seen clogging roads heading West out of the city, while further East, near the Russian border, the mayor of Kharkiv urged citizens not to leave their homes. In a recent address, broadcast live on Russian national television, Putin urged Ukrainian forces to lay down their arms and go home, saying all responsibility for possible bloodshed would be entirely on the conscience of the Ukrainian Government. “Our plans are not to occupy Ukraine, we do not plan to impose ourselves on anyone,” he said, but threatened “those who may be tempted to intervene” on Ukraine's behalf. “Whoever tries to interfere with us, and even more so to create threats to our country, to our people, should know that Russia's response will be immediate and will lead you to such consequences as you have never experienced in your history,” he said. Before the announcement of military action, Ukrainian President Zelensky appealed for peace but vowed the country would defend itself. “If we are attacked militarily, if they try to take away our freedom, our lives, our children's lives, we will defend ourselves,” the Ukrainian President said, in a speech in Russian and directed at Russian citizens. “When you attack, you will see our faces and not our spines, our faces.” U.S. President Biden made the following statement on Wednesday night: The prayers of the entire world are with the people of Ukraine tonight as they suffer an unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces. President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering. Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way. The world will hold Russia accountable.
