Prime Minister Keith Rowley held a Press Conference at 2:30pm this afternoon (Thursday 28th January 2021) to discuss several important topics, including COVID-19, the Venezuela/Guyana border issue and the recent Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Election. Below are the key points discussed today, courtesy of TTT Live Online: - Prime Minister Keith Rowley addressed citizens’ response to COVID-19 over the Christmas period. Though cases rose slightly in the last few weeks, he is pleased with the population’s overall response to managing the virus over the festive period, and again called for good sense to continue to prevail in the coming weeks. P.M Rowley noted that citizens’ response over Christmas has now enabled some students to return to school from 8th February 2021. Apart from Forms 4 - 6, the rest of the school population must stay home this term, with Standard 5/SEA students returning in April. Additional staff will be stationed at schools to ensure health protocols are maintained. P.M Rowley also urged parents/guardians/school transportation to ensure students get to and from school in the quickest time possible. - P.M Rowley said this country is anxiously awaiting the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines. T&T is still awaiting confirmation on the number of COVID-19 vaccines it will receive, but the Prime Minister is hoping for a sufficient quantity for the population. - P.M Rowley also addressed the border dispute between Guyana and Venezuela, with the latest development being the seizure of Guyanese fishing vessels and crew by Venezuela. He noted that CARICOM has been monitoring this matter closely, and has called for the immediate release of the crew and their boats. - P.M Rowley said he sought legal advice on the 6/6 deadlock following the THA Election on Monday, but he is hopeful the new impasse over the selection of a Presiding Officer is resolved on its own. He said the PNM, through Chief Secretary Ancil Dennis and his Assembly team, will remain in office until this matter is settled. He also stated that the Government stands ready to approach the Parliament to fix whatever problems that exist with the Tobago Parliament. P.M Rowley said he does not know of any rumour to entice one of the Opposition Assemblymen to cross the floor to the PNM’s side. - On his health, the Prime Minister said: "I am doing pretty well. I am on medication and I am taking it as prescribed by my Doctors who have done a very good job with me. So far, I am doing very good. In fact, I am working harder in the last three (3) days than before I had my medical procedure." Watch the Press Conference below in its entirety. In moving a motion of ‘No Confidence’ in the Minister of National Security, Stuart Young, in Parliament on Wednesday (27th January 2021), it was revealed by the Opposition that Minister Young allowed selected persons to enter the country without having to undergo the required quarantine under the Public Health Regulations. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar notes that, “According to a letter from the Ministry of National Security given to the Opposition by concerned individuals, Minister Young personally allowed persons to bypass official quarantine measures by going from the airport directly to their residences.” She further states that, “This is a slap in the face to the thousands of nationals of Trinidad and Tobago who remain stranded abroad.” Persad-Bissessar said the country was told that International Election Observers were unable to monitor the General Election on 10th August 2020 due to Trinidad and Tobago’s quarantine requirements. She questions, “Why did this privilege not apply then?” See the Opposition Leader’s full statement below: Stuart Young caught in another lie Two (2) men were caught by Officers of the Central Division in the act of stealing Government property from a school compound yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 27th January 2021).

The Prime Minister may seek to clarify this matter today. Earlier this week the Ministry of Education announced its plans for the phased physical re-opening of schools beginning on 8th February 2021.
