The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has launched a formal review following Will Smith’s shocking assault on Chris Rock during the Oscars ceremony on Sunday night (27th March 2022). The Academy initially said it condemned violence without mentioning Smith by name, but now it is making its displeasure over the incident more explicit. A Spokesperson for the organization said on Monday, “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.” From the new statement, it appears that Smith may face some type of disciplinary action or sanction — but will he be made to forfeit his ‘Best Actor’ Academy Award win from last night? Although unlikely, only time will tell what consequences will be faced by Smith. In its official Standards of Conduct, the Academy states it is “categorically opposed to any form of abuse.” This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates. [Source: Variety]
