UPDATE (30/03/24): According to reports, Police have ruled the death of Ross as accidental. Based on investigations, it appears Ross and a fellow resident went to hunt agouti and other wild animals in the forest, even though the Hunting Season is closed. Moments after setting his trap gun, Ross was accidentally shot in the head by the weapon.
His friend then allegedly made up the story about going to dig for yams, as he was afraid he would be charged since the Hunting Season is closed.
A man is believed to have been killed by a trap gun while digging for yams in a forest in Arima, sometime between Saturday night (23rd March, 2024) and early Sunday morning. The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Kerron Ross of Maturita Extension, Bypass Road, Arima.
According to reports, Ross went into a forest on Saturday, located North off Maturita Extension, with a 40-year-old neighbour to dig for yams. However, around 2:00 PM, Ross reportedly left the man near a river and went further inside the forest. After approximately two (2) hours, the man realized that Ross did not return and went to another location to continue digging for yams.
Around 1:00 AM on Sunday morning, the neighbor left the forest and visited Ross’ family to confirm whether or not he had returned home. The neighbor was told he was not there. A search was subsequently mounted and Ross’ lifeless body was found a mile into the forest, with a wound to his head. A report was made to the Police and a party of Officers along with the District Medical Officer (DMO) responded to the scene. Police later found a 12-gauge trap gun with a spent casing approximately six (6) feet from where Ross’ body was located. PC Williams of the Arima Police Station is probing the incident.
