Three (3) Police Officers are dead following a shooting incident at a home in Charlotte, North Carolina, this afternoon (Monday 29th April, 2024). A total of eight (8) Law Enforcement Officers were shot during the incident, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief, Johnny Jennings. The Officers were said to be attempting to serve a warrant at a home in Charlotte, North Carolina. Among the three (3) dead Officers are a Deputy U.S. Marshal and two (2) local Task Force Officers, authorities say.
According to reports, the shooting unfolded in the 5000 block of Galway Drive as members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were serving a warrant for possession of firearm by a convicted felon, Police Chief Jennings said at a Press Conference this evening.
The Officers were subsequently met with gunfire from a “high-powered rifle” and returned fire, fatally shooting a suspect in the front yard of the house. Jennings said the U.S. Marshals had been serving the warrant to that suspect. “As Officers approached, they received additional gunfire from inside the residence,” the Police Chief said. Three (3) members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force were killed, Jennings said. In a statement to CNN, the U.S. Marshals Service confirmed one of the dead was a Deputy U.S. Marshal. Four (4) Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officers were also shot, including one who is in critical condition, “fighting for his life” in the Hospital, the Police Chief said. The other Officers are in stable condition. The Chief did not identify the Officers as authorities are working to notify their families.
Investigations are continuing.

According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), the South-most end of a passing frontal system is to the North-Northeast of the Lesser Antilles and will create low-level convergence across the Leeward Islands throughout this outlook period (Tuesday 30th April - Saturday 4th May, 2024), with partly cloudy to cloudy periods producing moderate showers in varying areas. The probability for the development of a heavy shower or thunderstorm increases towards the more Northerly islands.
For the most part, the Windward Islands are expected to be relatively fairer than the Leeward Islands, but with low-level convergence, a surface perturbation (trough) and some increase in moisture advection on Wednesday (1st May, 2024) and Thursday (2nd May, 2024), Trinidad and Tobago is likely to see partly cloudy, to at times, cloudy conditions, with light to moderate showers in varying areas, and a 40% chance for the development of isolated heavy showers or a thunderstorm. In the event of a heavy shower or thunderstorm, winds can become gusty and street or flash flooding is likely in the vicinity. The Met Office notes that there is mild Saharan dust in the atmosphere at present. From Thursday (2nd May, 2024), Saharan dust concentration in the atmosphere is expected to increase to mild to moderate for the remainder of this outlook period. In the event of any bush or brush fires, landfill or forest fires, together with the Saharan dust, a reduction in air quality is to be expected. Sensitive persons are advised to take precautions as necessary. Please continue to pay attention to the latest forecasts, alerts, and information issued by the TTMS. The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is advising customers of unplanned water interruption due to a mechanical problem at the South Oropouche Booster Station.
Affected areas are as follows:
WASA notes that restoration is expected by 12:00 PM on Tuesday (30th April, 2024). The Authority thanks customers for their patience and understanding. A Penal mother and her two (2) teenage daughters are now in stable condition at the San Fernando General Hospital after they allegedly consumed a poisoned meal at home.
According to reports, the 42-year-old mother prepared a meal of roast melongene and roti at their home at Penal Rock Road, around 10:30 PM on Thursday night (25th April, 2024). However, soon after she and her daughters, ages sixteen (16) and seventeen (17), consumed the meal, they began vomiting and complaining of stomach aches. An Ambulance was called, which took the three (3) family members to the Siparia District Health Facility. They were subsequently transferred to the SFGH for further medical treatment. The 16-year-old daughter was initially placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but was later moved. Health personnel at the Hospital informed the Police of a possible case of organophosphate poisoning. Officers then visited the home and retrieved a roasted melongene, pieces of roti, and a drink mixture. Organophosphates are a said to be a class of insecticides that are very toxic. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), persons can be exposed to organophosphorus insecticides by eating foods treated with these chemicals. Exposure can also occur from hand-to-mouth contact with surfaces contaminated with insecticides. Investigations are continuing, led by W/Cpl. Monsegue of the Penal Police Station. A British national who was seriously injured in a shark attack in Tobago on Friday morning (26th April, 2024) is “aware of what is happening” and “able to communicate,” according to his wife. The victim, identified as 64-year-old Peter Smith of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, was vacationing on the island with his wife, Joanne Smith, and friends, when he was brutally attacked by a ferocious bull shark in Courland Bay. His wife said two (2) of their friends stayed in the water to “battle the shark.”
Smith is currently in intensive care at the Scarborough General Hospital, where he is in a stable condition.
“Peter has suffered damage to his left arm and leg, puncture wounds to the abdomen and injuries to his right hand, the full extent of which are still being evaluated,” said Mrs. Smith. Hospital medics are now deciding on “the future course of treatment,” she added.
The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) said the incident involved a bull shark, estimated to be between eight (8) to ten (10) feet (2.4m to 3m) long and two (2) feet (60cm) wide. THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine said on Saturday (27th April, 2024) that Smith had some fingers re-attached following the shark attack, with “significant wounds” to one of his legs that would require “extensive work.” A $10,000 reward which was previously offered to any “registered fishermen” who could capture the bull shark and move it away from the beaches, was retracted, the Chief Secretary announced on Saturday.
Smith’s wife said on Sunday (28th April, 2024), “As of 9:00 AM local time today, Peter is aware of what is happening and is able to communicate a little, although he is still under strong medication.” She thanked “all those that assisted at the scene, and especially the two (2) friends that remained in the water to battle the shark.”
Mrs. Smith also thanked “the wonderfully kind people of Tobago for all their help and support.” Water Sports Manager at the nearby Starfish Hotel, Orion Jakerov, who witnessed the horrific attack, said other persons in the water at the time were “physically trying to fight off the shark.” Speaking to TTT Live Online, Jakerov said, “I don't think they saw it. They were about waist height in the water so they weren't out of their depth. I think their backs were turned and they were just kind of lounging around. Nobody saw the shark coming.”
Authorities have since closed ten (10) beaches and all coastal areas between the town of Plymouth on the island's Northern coast and Store Bay on its Western tip, a stretch of around seven (7) miles (11.3 Km), in the wake of the attack. Drones were being used to carry out surveillance of the area, and anyone operating a boat was urged to exercise caution.
According to the BBC, bull sharks are known to be aggressive and are most often found in shallow waters along tropical coastlines, making them — along with great white and tiger sharks — among the species most likely to come into contact with, and attack, humans.
