The headline and body of this article has since been updated. A 5-year-old baby girl is currently hospitalized in critical condition after she was found unconscious in a locked vehicle, where a relative allegedly left her for two (2) hours on Sunday afternoon (29th October 2023). The alarming incident is said to have occurred in Siparia.
An initial investigation by Siparia Police Officers found that the child was left alone in the vehicle, which had been switched off and locked, with no ventilation. According to reports, the child’s 41-year-old mother allegedly left her in the care of a female relative to attend a funeral. The relative reportedly made arrangements with the mother to bring her daughter and other children to the funeral. However, around 4:00 PM, the relative arrived at the funeral without the 5-year-old girl. When the child’s mother asked the relative for her daughter, she told her that she left the child in the vehicle. The mother returned to the vehicle and found her daughter covered in vomit and she had also urinated on herself. The little girl was rushed to the Siparia District Health Facility and later hospitalized at the San Fernando General Hospital in critical condition. She was eventually moved from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to the Resuscitation Room. She is being treated for severe dehydration, secondary to heat stroke, pneumonia and hypoxic brain injury. Investigations are continuing. More on this as it becomes available. [Source: Trinidad Express] The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has extended its Hazardous Seas Alert (Yellow Level) until 2:00 PM on Tuesday (31st October 2023) for Northern and North-Eastern exposed coastal areas of Trinidad and Tobago and to a lesser extent, the North-facing shoreline in the Gulf of Paria.
The Alert was initially scheduled to remain in effect until 4:00 PM this afternoon (Monday 30th October 2023). According to the Met Office, Northerly long-period swells which have been affecting the coastlines of Trinidad and Tobago are slowly dampening. Despite this, occasional coastal breakers will continue to be larger than normal during High Tide and caution is still advised. Gusty winds in the vicinity of heavy downpours can further agitate sea conditions. All marine interests should monitor near-shore sea conditions and exercise caution along affected areas, especially at High Tides. Please continue to pay attention to the latest forecasts, alerts, and information issued by the TTMS. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) on Monday (30th October 2023), two (2) areas of low pressure, one to the West of the Windward islands and the other to the Northwest of the Leeward Islands, have been helping to influence the direction and speed of the equatorial East to West flow, across the lesser Antilles and Trinidad and Tobago. This has been a factor in creating intermittent areas of convergence, and small perturbations (troughs) approaching the Eastern Caribbean.
Together with moisture advection, daytime heating and local dynamics, these will be the influences for weather over Trinidad and Tobago during the next few days. The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is presently to the South of Trinidad. A Hazardous Seas Alert (Yellow Level) is currently in effect until Tuesday afternoon (31st October 2023). The Met Office has provided the following 5-day weather outlook for T&T: Tuesday (31st October 2023)
Wednesday (1st November 2023)
Thursday (2nd November 2023)
Friday (3rd November 2023)
Saturday (4th November 2023)
In the event of a heavy shower or a thunderstorm, winds can become gusty and street or flash flooding is likely in the vicinity. With the occurrence of any intense or prolonged precipitation, the risk of landslips/landslides will become elevated in areas so prone. Mostly moderate concentrations of Saharan dust will be present in the atmosphere during the next few days. The Met Office notes that as an extended forecast goes further into the future, it is normal for the certainty to be reduced relative to the extended time period. Please continue to pay attention to the latest forecasts, alerts, and information issued by the TTMS.

UPDATE: Prime Minister Keith Rowley released the following statement on the passing of Mrs. Bhagwansingh: “Today we received the sad news of the passing of one of our stalwart women, Mrs. Helen Bhagwansingh. Mrs. Bhagwansingh was a strong woman who made a name for herself as a business magnate holding her own and even taking the lead in very many areas which hitherto were the preserve of men.
She was an inspiration to many and a philanthropist who believed in her country. On behalf of my family and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, I extend my deepest condolences to the family and associates of a great lady who made us proud when we needed a heroine.“
Businesswoman Helen Bhagwansingh, recipient of the 2011 Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT), has died at the age of eighty-three (83) after ailing for some time. She is said to have passed away early this morning (Monday 30th October 2023).
The news was confirmed this morning by her family, who said in a Notice that all stores in the Bhagwansingh’s Group will be closed today.
In 2000, Bhagwansingh was named ‘Woman of the Millennium’ by the TT Chamber of Energy and was the first woman to be inducted into the TT Chamber of Industry and Commerce’s Business Hall of Fame.
Bhagwansingh was the widow of Hubert Bhagwansingh, who died in 2019, and with whom she opened their first hardware store in Port-of-Spain, followed by many other enterprises in the ensuing years. Well-known for her contributions to many charitable causes, the deeply spiritual Bhagwansingh donated $5 million to establish a trust for diabetes education, research and prevention, after learning that the incidence of diabetes in Trinidad and Tobago was approaching epidemic proportions. Bhagwansingh, who was born in San Fernando, was revered as one of the most successful businesswomen in Trinidad and Tobago. A call by her father to fill in for a sick employee at a small branch of Ramoutarsingh’s Hardware at Sea Lots, paved the way for her to start the Bhagwansingh’s empire. Within two (2) years, Bhagwansingh and her husband were able to transform the premises, surrounded by a mangrove swamp in an area referred to as the ‘La Basse,’ into a successful business. She then acquired the business from her father, Daniel, and renamed it Bhagwansingh’s Hardware. This led to an expansion of the business into Chaguanas, Marabella and Trincity. In 1996, Bhagwansingh’s acquired Dansteel and in 1998, Centrin, turning Bhagwansingh’s into an empire that today employs over 1,200 people, including her four (4) children. Bhagwansingh was also responsible for the Christmas stars erected on the Laventille and San Fernando Hills. RIP. [Source: Newsday]
UPDATE: TSTT has issued a statement, denying that hackers were able to gain access to its cyber systems, which it says holds terabytes of data. Details here.

However, according to FalconFeeds.io, a cyber security firm that offers a feed on X (formerly Twitter), reporting on breaches, tstt.co.tt and bmobile.co.tt were compromised by ransomware group Ransomexx, with a reported 6GB of customer lines, ID scans, gitlab projects and database dumps as part of the haul.
Asked about this today (Monday 30th October 2023), Minister Gonzales responded by saying, “It is not true.” He added that TSTT will issue a statement on the matter soon.
In March 2022, there was a malware incursion at TSTT, but at that time, Minister Gonzales had said no one's data was compromised. More on this as it becomes available. [Source: Newsday]
