Three (3) suspects were arrested and are currently in Police custody after attempting to defraud the Trinidad and Tobago Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and its contractors.
According to the HDC, on Tuesday (30th April, 2024), two (2) contractors visited its Head Office with fraudulent documents, complete with the forged signature of the HDC's Managing Director, Jayselle McFarlane. The men presented the documents to the HDC's Head of Security, who spotted the fake documents and alerted the Police Officers located at the HDC's premises. The Officers arrested the suspects who were also on the compound — two (2) of whom were caught in the carpark and one who waited in a vehicle nearby. Members of the Fraud Squad, attached to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), arrived on the scene shortly after and questioned the three (3) men. In a Media Release following the incident on Tuesday, the HDC said it understands the transaction occurred the day before, on Monday (29th April, 2024), when the suspects, purporting to be bonafide employees of the HDC, presented the two (2) entrepreneurs with HDC contracts. “The contractors gave the men a cheque but suspected the documents were fake. On Tuesday, the contractors lured the suspects to the HDC office with promises of additional funds. However, the suspects were caught, arrested and taken into custody,” the HDC said. Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Camille Robinson-Regis, expressed her disappointment at the suspects who attempted to deceive the contractors, steal their money and sully the reputation of the HDC in the process. She thanked the HDC's Head of Security, Police Officers stationed at the HDC's Head Office and those attached to the TTPS for their quick response in capturing the men. HDC's Chairman Noel Garcia also commended the Corporation's Head of Security and Police Officers for their swift decision-making, which led to the capture and arrest of the three (3) men. HDC's Managing Director, Jayselle McFarlane, was appalled by the incident, expressing concern that her signature would be used in this way. She urged contractors to refrain from conducting financial transactions in locations other than HDC buildings. She reminded the public that all business deals initiated by the HDC are done at its Head Office, located at 44 - 46 South Quay, Port-of-Spain; its South Office located at 2 Mc Gillivary Street, San Fernando and its Maloney Office, located at Jacana Avenue, Maloney Gardens, D'abadie. The Media Release concluded by saying, “The HDC takes the opportunity to remind the public that it does not provide houses for cash. Anyone who attempts to defraud the Corporation or its contractors will face the full force of the law. The HDC remains steadfast in its mission to eliminate instances of fraudulent activities against its clients and contractors.” We are a small operation.
