UPDATE 3: Police have located the Hyundai Ioniq and arrested the hit-and-run driver, who is said to have several traffic infractions against his name, including for driving while holding a cellphone, and driving without valid insurance.
UPDATE 2: The Hyundai Ioniq sedan (PDR 7741) responsible for hitting the Kiss truck from behind is said to be registered to a Jelani Mapp of Erica Street in Laventille.
UPDATE: The driver of the Kiss truck is confirmed to have died in this hit-and-run road traffic accident.
According to reports, a Kiss Baking Company truck ran off the Southbound lane of the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway a short while ago this morning (Thursday 28th March, 2024), in the vicinity of the Ato Boldon Stadium.
At least one person is said to be unresponsive at the scene of the crash, in a possible fatality. The man has been identified as 55-year-old Neil Ballai, of Eccles Trace in Spring Village, Valsayn.
Dash-cam footage of the crash shows a black Hyundai Ioniq sedan swerving between lanes and smashing into the rear of a Kiss delivery truck, sending it careening into a ditch off the Highway. The Isuzu truck landed on its side, pinning Ballai, the driver. Riding along with him in the truck was 34-year-old Terrance Jagasar, of Cumuto Main Road, Cumuto. He sustained injuries and was attended to by Emergency Health Services personnel before being transported to the Couva Health Facility for further medical treatment.
The black Hyundai Ioniq, however, did not stop to render assistance to the occupants of the Kiss truck — it continued traveling along the Highway, with the bonnet dislodged and blocking the view of the driver. The driver was somehow able to exit the Highway at the off-ramp of the Preysal Overpass, and was last seen driving East towards Mission Road or Gran Couva. The video footage is being used to help identify the driver, who fled the scene.
The accident caused a build-up of traffic this morning on the Northbound lane of the Highway from the Couva Flyover.
