According to Police, the three (3) persons involved in the tragic accident on Sunday morning (31st October 2021) were on their way to a planned hike in North Trinidad. Two (2) passengers died in the crash while the driver sustained serious injuries and is currently warded at the San Fernando General Hospital. The identities of the deceased has been released - Branj Smith, 18, of Point Lisas Gardens and Anthony Grant, 35, of San Fernando. Smith was a student of the Carapichaima West Secondary School. The driver has been identified as Shawn Martin, 24, of Couva. Reports indicate the trio were in a blue Nissan Primera when the driver, Martin, lost control and ran off the road and crashed into a concrete culvert on the corner of the Northbound lane of the Uriah Butler Highway and Birjah Road. The bodies of Smith and Grant were dismembered after they were thrown out of the vehicle. Witnesses said the car flipped several times. Police suspect they were not wearing their seatbelts. Grant’s mother, Joy Vincent, said people came to her home around 11am on Sunday with the horrific news of her son’s death. She said he did not live with her and she was uncertain where he was going.
