Anil Maharaj, a Councillor at the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, was charged last night (Thursday 15th July 2021) with one (1) count of misbehaviour in public office. Maharaj, the United National Congress (UNC) Councillor for Cumuto/Tamana, was arrested on Thursday by a team of Officers from the Anti-Corruption Investigations Bureau (ACIB).
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the arrest followed a meeting between Officers of the ACIB and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard SC, who gave advice to charge Maharaj with one (1) count of misbehaviour in public office. The Police Officers investigated a report that between 1st January and 30th June 2021, Maharaj demanded the sum of $15,000 from a contractor at the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation. Maharaj is the Chairman of the Finance Committee at the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation. He is expected to appear virtually before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate today (Friday 16th July 2021).
