Twitter has apparently had enough of Donald Trump. On the heels of Facebook banning President Trump “indefinitely,” Twitter announced on Friday (8th January 2021) that it has permanently suspended the President’s account. Twitter said, “After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.” The permanent suspension follows the storming of the U.S Capitol building by pro-Trump extremists, which led to the deaths of five (5) people, including a U.S Capitol Police Officer. Twitter at the time took the action of hiding three (3) of Trump’s tweets and demanded he remove them. Trump eventually did so — leading to the removal of the temporary lock on his account. See Twitter’s full statement below on the permanent suspension of Trump’s account. After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.
