Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 will cost US $399.99 for the Digital Edition when it launches on 12th November 2020, while the regular version will cost US $499.99. The main difference between them will be the optical disc drive - the Digital Edition will not have one. Pre-Orders began yesterday (17th September 2020) at “select retailers” but quickly sold out, leaving many fans disgruntled at Sony’s lack of proper prior notice. Sony, of course, will be directly competing with Microsoft’s next-gen consoles, with the company set to release its entry-level Xbox Series S at US $299 and its flagship Xbox Series X for US $499 on 10th November 2020. Sony’s release date for the PS5 (12th November 2020) applies to the U.S, Japan, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. The rest of the World will get the new console on 19th November 2020. Sony has yet to finalize a release date for China, which will be announced at a later time. According to Radio Times: One of the biggest selling points of the PS5 is the custom SSD rather than a hard drive. This means the PS5 will be able to read data quicker and more efficiently, meaning bigger open worlds, near-instant load times and fewer texture pop-ins. Essentially the SSD means the PS5 is going to be really fast - around 100 times quicker than the PS4. The PlayStation 4 initially cost US $399 at launch, although it currently sells for US $299, while the PlayStation 4 Pro originally sold for US $399 - a price it still usually sells at today. It’s unclear if Sony is planning to drop prices or discontinue the older models once the PlayStation 5 is out later this year. The PlayStation 5 will be backwards-compatible with an “overwhelming majority” of existing PlayStation 4 games. Note that prices for all of these consoles will vary due to demand and availability.
