According to reports, Lance Cpl Keverne Daffort Miller (43) went to his parents’ home at Reservoir Hill in Point Fortin early on Friday morning after learning about a commotion involving a group of people there. Minutes later, he was gunned down by an off-duty Police Officer in his parents’ yard. The group, comprised of mostly Soldiers and Police Officers, was at the house to celebrate Miller’s son's birthday. The son, 24, who lives at the house, is a Police Constable based in the Central Division. Miller’s father, Daffort Miller, 73, said the bacchanal unfolded after one of the men at the birthday party, another Soldier, used pepper spray to defend himself against a woman during an argument. The fumes was so strong that it made Daffort vomit. Someone called Miller shortly after 2am to let him know what was taking place at his parents’ house, as he was not at the party. He jumped on his motorbike and arrived less than ten (10) minutes later. Miller, still wearing his helmet, walked up to the group and said, “You know how I stupid – leave my mother yard.” Daffort said, “He (Miller) turned around to leave, and I was telling him to forget them people. The helmet was on his head and like he was not hearing me.” Daffort then heard four (4) gunshots. I ducked down and like I get stupid. My son was on the ground. To me, he was already dead. I will never forget that image. Only then I realised he (the shooter) was a Policeman. No one was in uniform. He said the Policeman kept asking, "Where is the gun? I want the gun.” Daffort noted, "I was there, and I did not see my son with any gun.” Miller was taken to the Point Fortin Area Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 4am on Friday morning. A Police Constable, who works with the Guard and Emergency Branch, has been detained at the Point Fortin Police Station for Miller’s killing. Police are also investigating unconfirmed reports that the Constable saw Miller brandishing a gun, became fearful for his life and others, and then shot him. The grieving father strongly denied claims that his son Miller had a gun. “So how come he got shot four times in his back? I am old, but I am not stupid. He did not have any gun. Four of the Policemen had guns,” Daffort said. Miller, a member of the regiment, was last posted at the La Romaine camp. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates. [Source: Newsday]
