The widow of one of the security guards who were shot dead during the deadly heist in September, outside Pennywise Super Centre in La Romaine, is pregnant with his child. Amanda La Vende's common-law husband, 51-year-old Jeffrey Peters, was unaware of the imminent addition to his family when he was killed by bandits on 19th September 2022.
Speaking with Newsday on Wednesday afternoon (22nd March 2023), La Vende of Morvant said she was unaware she was carrying a child at the time of Peters’ death. “I did not have any symptoms. I had no clue. Our last child turned two in December, and I was still breastfeeding. I found out sometime after the funeral. My due date is at the end of May or early June,” she said. January would have marked eight years since they became a couple. The unborn baby will be the couple's third child together and Peters' fourth, as he had another child from a previous relationship. This will be La Vende‘s fifth child. She said from time to time, their 3-year-old daughter would randomly say, “Daddy, Daddy” or “Where Daddy?” She added, “I do not know if she is actually asking for him because she would say it and walk off. The older one is aware of his death. Initially, she often spoke about him, but I always used to cry. She stopped talking about him with me, but I told her not to. I feel she stopped because of me crying.” Asked how she is coping financially, considering Peters was the breadwinner, La Vende replied: “I am getting by. I am not complaining.” Earlier on Wednesday, President of the Estate Police Association (EPA), Deryck Richardson, revealed the pregnancy at a seminar, adding that the widow had given him permission to say it publicly. “Jeffrey Peters' wife is pregnant with a child he did not know he had fathered. At the time of his death, she was pregnant. Let that sink in,” Richardson said. He noted that the Association was still “lending support” to Peters' widow. On the afternoon of 19th September 2022, three (3) security guards were exiting Pennywise Plaza in La Romaine with sales from the company, when they were ambushed by a group of masked men. The incident was recorded on CCTV cameras near the building.
The suspects, who were all armed with handguns and rifles, exited their Nissan Sylphy vehicle and shot at the guards. The guards in turn returned fire, however, they were hit several times about their bodies. The gunmen grabbed the bags of cash before escaping the waiting vehicle, which then sped onto the South Trunk Road.
Several persons were detained and eventually charged in connection with the incident, which claimed the lives of two (2) security guards, 49-year old Jerry Stuart and 51-year-old Jeffery Peters. Stuart died while undergoing treatment. A third security guard, 57-year-old Peiola Baptiste, was also critically injured and rushed for medical attention. She underwent emergency surgery at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, having sustained a stroke while receiving treatment for gunshot injuries sustained during the attack.
