Pictured Above: PDP Political Leader, Watson Duke. Political Leader of the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP), Watson Duke, responded today (Monday 5th December 2022) to several resignations from his party, including that of Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), Farley Augustine.
In a Media Release titled ‘Farley and Friends Resignation from PDP,’ Duke addressed his fellow Tobagonians and said, “On behalf of the Progressive Democratic Patriots, of which am Political Leader, I wish to thank Farley and Friends for doing the honourable thing by resigning from the PDP and giving all of Tobago a fresh chance to vote for Change in the upcoming 2023 THA Elections. This cowardly act of abandoning the PDP Mandate and Tobagonians for 30 pieces of silver must be treated with scorn and contempt by us, the right-thinking people of Tobago.” He added, “Tobago has been ambushed by Farley and Friends resignation from the PDP as it was not expected, since it was clear to all and sundry that after being elected on a PDP slate, my only and constant request was that they implement the Mandate that got us elected; that is ’People Before Politics.’ To stay true in governance on what we campaigned on, I had to publicly expose what we do since the people are not bystanders, but should be actively involved in policy-making. However, they abandoned the Mandate which gave us, the PDP, our victory, and they used their THA Executive powers to muzzle the voice of the people, which is likened to the voice of God. Remember, we promised Tobago participatory democracy in making decisions that is likely to affect Tobago, politically economically, socially and culturally. Instead, time and time again, they refused to answer the calls of the common man, they were too busy to listen to the cry of the financially and physically distressed, as they were clearly seeking their own interests rather than that of Tobago.” The PDP Political Leader went on to say, “Regrettably, I saw first-hand where small contractors and Tobago businessmen were made to bid for paltry contracts while Trinidad contractors were given a lion's share of the contracts. Over the last year, big dollars flowed like water in the wrong direction, prompting the Prime Minister to admit that all the Development Budget of 300 million dollars, went back to Trinidad contractors without Tobago contractors being fully paid for what they were owed. Yes, Farley and Friends chose to allocate 17.5 million dollars on a weekend fete, while CEPEP, REFORESTATION and URP workers continue to be paid late and thousands of Tobagonians are jobless and hopeless.” Duke’s Media Release concluded by saying, “Today I am proud to join with all Tobagonians in demanding fresh THA Elections no later than January 2023. The people of Tobago need to elect an Executive with a clear Mandate and not be governed by an Executive that steals power with no Mandate.” We are a small operation.
