The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) said on Wednesday (4th May 2022) it has been tracking an African Easterly Wave (AEW), which moved off the West African Coast a few days ago. This AEW is currently located South of 8°N latitude and near 56°W longitude, which places its axis over South America, near Guyana and Suriname.
The Met Office notes that Tropical Waves (TWs) are troughs of low pressure in the tropical trade wind easterlies that typically move from East to West. Some TWs are African Easterly Waves that originate over Africa and propagate Westward across tropical Africa, the tropical North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean, while some may have other origins. The TTMS officially declares the start of the Wet Season based on either of the following conditions: (a) The passage of a Tropical Wave that is an African Easterly Wave that was tracked off the West African Coast, which brings measurable rainfall to Trinidad and Tobago. The onset date of the Wet Season is the first day of the associated rainfall; or (b) The Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) shifts Northward and brings measurable rainfall to Trinidad and Tobago. The onset date of the Wet Season is the first day of the associated rainfall. According to the Met Office, the TW currently being tracked is expected to remain South of Trinidad and Tobago. “The probability at this time for this TW to affect the country with measurable rainfall is quite small.” However, the TTMS is also monitoring a shallow trough, together with a narrow band of low-level converging winds that are expected to produce showers and isolated Thunderstorms from Friday (6th May 2022) into the weekend, with the rainfall activity mostly favoring Southern Trinidad.
